I have extensive experience as a VBA & SQL Developer, both creating applications from scratch and enhancing/ fixing existing applications. Whilst most of my development has been in Access and Excel, in recent years I've gained lots of experience developing SQL Server, including building databases ab initio. I’ve been offered contract extensions with every organisation I’ve worked for in the last 19 years and believe this is because I have a reputation as a diligent and reliable contractor / employee.Even after all these years, I still very much enjoy developing in Access and Excel, whether in an IT team with other developers or as a standalone developer within a business team. However, with the decline in the need for Access developers, I'm now keen to make the natural progression into a pure SQL Server Developer role.

Microsoft Access DeveloperBrowns Integrated Technologies Aug 2016 - Jan 2017Watford, United KingdomContracted to work on a project for Public Health England (West Midlands), assisting the in-house development team to fix and enhance their Colposcopy Database. The database is used by a number of hospitals in the Midlands. The database was initially in the structure of a front-end which also held most of the tables and a back-end that held the primary data tables. The database was intended to be installed on a network drive and potentially accessed by multiple users at once. The enhancements included:- developing a utility that could be used to automate the upgrade of existing databases to a fully front-end / back-end structure.- assisting the in-house development team in upgrading the back-end from Access to SQL Server- assisting the in-house development team in upgrading the database to cater for multiple hospitals in a single Trust. -
Microsoft Access DeveloperFinancial Conduct Authority Jul 2015 - Dec 2015London, United KingdomIn this role I was a solo developer based within the HR Learning and Development MI Team, working on an Access database that had previously been built to; manage and collate course feedback from delegates, store and calculate some MI statistics and provide some basic reporting functions. The database suffered from a number of serious issues, such as reports running very slowly, crucial functions not working at all and a complete lack of dynamics that made it impossible for a standard user to make any amendments.Initially I was asked to fix a number of urgent problems, examples of which include:• On the first day I amended a query that was taking over 90 minutes to run so that it completed in less than two minutes. The previous developer had failed to understand how queries were processed when a “SELECT * FROM [table] WHERE….” statement was included in the criteria.• Amended the feedback import process so that it didn’t break when attempting to import feedback forms that had had their structure altered by the delegate.• Amended the feedback reporting statistics so that they were calculated correctly.I then developed an automated MI Report that would output the calculated statistics to Excel. The report itself needed to be stable, include the underlying data and be dynamic, which was achieved using key Excel functions and capabilities such as, VLOOKUP, Tables, Pivot-Tables, Named Ranges and Advanced Conditional Formatting.I was then extended for a couple of months in order to redevelop a couple of existing functions which had become obsolete because criteria in queries had been hard-coded. The new functions allowed users to select / amend criteria, such as which courses to include in a Career Pathway, using a professional user-interface. Other benefits included greater stability through proper error-handling and quicker, accurate reports through more efficient use of queries (in one case replacing a report that used 65 queries with one that needed just 6). -
Vba / Rad DeveloperHsbc Investment Bank Feb 2012 - Jul 2015London, United KingdomThis role was based in the Product Control IT Team who were responsible for developing the Tactical and Strategic solutions for the Product Control Teams and made use of a range of technologies, including; Microsoft Access, Excel, SQL Server and C#. Prior to my joining the PCIT Team, they had found that too much of the developers’ time was being spent dealing with support issues. I was therefore hired to act as the contact point for users and to investigate and resolve the issues with as little interruption to the developers as possible. I was required to quickly familiarise myself with all the applications developed by the team and in most cases, develop, test and release any fixes. This role required extensive knowledge of Access, Excel, VBA, SQL Server (primarily Stored Procedures and data manipulation, but some exposure to SSRS) and eventually an understanding of C#. It also gave me exposure to a formal version-control process (initially using VSS, then SVN), enhanced my ability to pick up and decipher code from a wide-range of developers, and allowed me to expand my knowledge of SQL Server development. After about three years I switched to a pure RAD Developer role, developing tactical solutions for the Product Control users. Most involved an Access application processing data imported from a variety of SQL Server databases and exporting dynamic reports to Excel. All these applications were multi-user, multi-location, often cross-team and required extensive use of VBA and T-SQL, including:• ADO and DAO • Classes• Ribbon Customisation• DSNless connection to SQL Server and OracleIn addition, the applications required:• Developing a professional user-interface• Building efficient queries• Securing the database (.mde / .accde)• Basic but effective version-control• Split front and back-end with the back-end installed on a common server and the front-end installed on the user’s pc with an installation script. -
