Profile bio

About Paul Scanlon

Whether it was filming a Mister Roger’s Neighborhood episode with Fred Rogers in 1987 or working in-country on an Afghanistan hospital complex reconstruction project in 2004, I’ve rarely turned down an interesting challenge in my career. I'm an architectural engineer with 40+ years of design, research, senior project management and marketing experience for an ENR Top 50 engineering firm (Michael Baker Jr., Inc.) and a BD&C Top 25 A/E Design Firm (VP/Director of Engineering, Burt Hill). I'm a registered Professional Engineer (1980), Certified Energy Manager(1980), Certified Green Building Engineer(2006), Certified LEED Accredited Professional(2009), and certified Penn State Master Gardener (2021).My current assignment, Director of Sustainability at SRU, takes me beyond the built environment and into the much broader field of sustainability - helping prepare organizations and students for the severe environmental challenges posed by global warming and climate change - civilization's greatest challenge yet.My experience at SRU has allowed me to learn much more about the global and local environmental challenges we now face, as well as to develop new skill sets such as conducting annual University greenhouse gas emissions inventories, preparing/updating our long-term Climate Action Plan, managing a team that developed our new Climate Neutrality Plan (2022), completing the AASHE STARS reports, and lecturing extensively on climate change issues and solutions. I also became an Ambassador for Climate Interactive and qualified to lead groups of all ages and educational backgrounds in using the climate simulation program En-ROADS to evaluate solutions to the climate crisis now facing us.I'm proud to say I've contributed to the University's reputation for being a leader in sustainability (see www.sru.edu/sustainability for a complete listing of awards). In 1984, I designed and built an earth-sheltered house for my family, complete with a living green roof, geothermal heating/cooling system, heat pump water heater, low-e glazing, abundant natural lighting and passive solar heating. In 1987 our house became the subject of a Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood episode ("Mr. Rogers Talks About Secrets", episode #1596) teaching young children about energy conservation. Our site now includes multiple natural gardens and a 16.8 kw solar photovoltaic system providing renewable electricity to an all-electric house - vastly reducing our carbon footprint.

Listed skills include Sustainability, Green Building, Leed, Project Management, and 38 others.

Director Of Sustainability

Current

Slippery Rock, Pa

As Director of Sustainability, my responsibilities at SRU are wide-ranging; after all, "sustainability" touches everyone's lives in myriad ways. These responsibilities include working closely with our Facilities and Finance Departments to continuously look for ways to improve our buildings' energy efficiency and helping make a college education more affordable by reducing our energy costs, while simultaneously reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. I also work with our faculty in the most important sustainability goal: Preparing our students to be the next generation of thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs to help the world meet its profound environmental challenges. One of the most economic ways to help mitigate climate change impacts is to conserve energy in our facilities. My previous career as an architectural engineer, and a close working relationship with SRU's Facilities Department, has helped contribute to SRU improving it's building energy efficiency by 40% and literally saving the university millions of dollars in operating costs.Grants I obtained through the EPA and the PA DCED have provided student interns with livable wages ($12 to $15/hour) while learning how to conduct technical assessments of food and beverage manufacturers, calculating operating cost savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and learning about sustainable consulting careers in the PA manufacturing industry.Additional grants received provided free Carbon Neutrality Planning services by Ever-Green Engineering, resulting in a long range plan to transition SRU away from fossil fuels burned in the central heating plant to geothermal heat pumps systems and renewable electricity to obtain carbon neutrality by 2037.

Dec 2012 - Present

Owner

Scanlon Engineering Llc

West Sunbury, Pa

Owner, engineering consulting firm specializing in energy-efficient building design, sustainability, energy conservation, building condition assessments, and hurricane upgrade engineering. I'm a registered Professional Engineer, Certified Green Building Engineer, Certified Energy Manager and LEED Accredited Professional with 35+ years experience. I'm also under contract with the Penn State Facilities Engineering Institute for developing and presenting 3-day water conservation workshops for U.S. General Services Administration facilities managers.Since becoming Director of Sustainability at Slippery Rock University, my consulting business has been limited to serving existing clients who are facing the challenge of upgrading their facilities to comply with the requirements of their business loss insurers to protect against business disruptions caused by increasing storm and hurricane intensities and frequency. Because of climate change, insurers (most notably for high production volume pharmaceutical manufacturers in High Velocity Hurricane Zones) are requiring upgrades to handle rainfall intensities literally double the minimum code requirement. Experiences gained in this type of engineering helps inform my understanding of climate change impacts and provides practical examples useful in my role as a guest lecturer for SRU sustainability classes.
