It's a network of blazing torches that light the fire of hope for a better tomorrow, during hard times like the ones we are living in. The Impact Hub buildings them selves are essentially co-working spaces for the members of the community, while doubling as event rooms for a variety of initiatives!When I became a volunteer Host at the IH Athens, there was no adaptation period.My typical duties included being responsible for who comes in and out of the space, keeping the place clean and tidy and tending to the needs of any member and/or events that were taking place inside the Impact Hub's facilities. It was analogous to hosting a party. Overlooking everything and making sure to smooth out any "sticking" points in the Hub's every day operations.What was not in the job description but was highly appreciated was what actually made me passionate about this opportunity. I acted as a mediator between members. I gradually got to know each member's (new and old) profile, their needs, dreams and goals for the future. This interaction with people from various backgrounds, from all over the world, broadened my mind and led me to a more solid understanding of today's reality. I was also able to more efficiently introduce to each other, members that - I believed - would benefit from a connection. Last but not least, it helped the IH team a lot, by understanding its people more and realizing how they can better support them. That was also how the spark inside me, to pursue a career in web developing, got lit, when a member proposed that I work on his project, although I had no previous experience. Show less

CityChange was our - my partner's and mine - romantic attempt, at contributing to a mentality shift, in the Greek people's mindset. A mindset that can be fully described as "everyone for themselves". A mindset that the economic crisis has accentuated. In practice, it was a grass root level initiative, in collaboration with the municipalities. Unable to find a dedicated programmer for our StartUp, I took it upon myself to delve into the world of Android Development. In two short months I went from knowing some basic Java (from my university studies) to completing a fully functional android application.The CityChange team participated in "DiploHack Athens: Opening the black box of Europe" that took place in April 2016. It was a hackathon facilitated by the Embassy of Netherlands, on Open Data. We advocated the need for transparency, on the part of the municipality towards its people, so that we can all work together towards a more efficient system.The Impact Hub Athens being our home during the whole venture, gave us the benefit to attend a variety of seminars and talks on entrepreneurship and start-ups. The most valuable one was actually a series of seminars called "Impact Hub Academy", that took us from ideation, to implementation and impact measurements. Although the offer for this position came out of nowhere, in a time I wasn't actively looking for an occupation - as I was still a student at the time - I am very glad it did. Even more glad I accepted it. The reason I voluntarily left was that it was taking too much time away from my studies. Even more glad I accepted it. The reason I voluntarily left was that it was taking too much time away from my studies. Unsustainable in the long run.During my whole nine months stay there, I was handling sensitive legal documents, regarding debt collection and real-estate property declarations. This made very good use of my attention to detail.I started of by making physical copies and validating documents to be sent to the courthouse. I was soon approached by the back office supervisor, who saw my skills of adaptation and fast learning, and given a new position. It involved the tasks of digitizing around 400 documents per day, renaming and archiving them properly. This was the period when I mostly took the initiative to find ways to speed up the process, which I have been shown by my supervisor - and bring that number up to 700 per day -, in order to more efficiently meet deadlines.In the last three months on top of the previous task - which was now occurring sporadically - I was assigned to overlook a process from start to end. Documents were coming in, their details logged into the database, validated for the courthouse and prepared for sending. For this I was assigned two other colleagues to help me. I trained them, after which I was constantly coordinating with them in order to keep improving the way we handled the tasks.Overall, I learned how to perform under pressure, how to efficiently communicate - horizontally and vertically - in a corporate environment and stay with my eyes on the prize.
