One time, I was asked to write a paper on the similarities between being a kitchen supervisor and being a dancer for a class. I looked at my professor bamboozled thinking "Wow, she really doesn't want me to pass this class." I tackled the task head-on and decided to look at the characteristics required for each job rather than the technicality behind each job. Here is what I came up with:Both jobs are tedious and require a high level of focus and discipline to prevent mistakes and injury. One slip-up, and I could slice my hand open with a breadknife and get 13 stitches (true story) or I could land a grand jeté on a straight leg and buckle my knee (not a true story, but I've seen it happen). Both jobs require careful analysis of whatever is being created and critical thinking skills. While creating my specials for the week, not only do I need to create recipes that taste good but create something that can mimicked by my employees during high volume rushes. When choreographing, I need to consider my intention and my end goal of the piece, and I have to create movement that my dancers will be able to do. Both jobs require teamwork skills, organizational skills, motivation, drive, leadership skills, etc. On the surface, the two jobs are very different. How do my knife skills enhance my ability to do petit battements? It doesn't. Deep down, however, the personal skills required of both jobs are quite similar. I have been practicing all of these skills through dance my whole life. Working as a line cook and kitchen supervisor has allowed me work on these skills in a different setting giving me the opportunity to refine the necessary skills to be a professional dancer, dance educator, choreographer, and advocator. I have been a dancer for about 19 years, and even in that extensive amount of time, my passion has yet to fade. Currently, I am teaching and choreographing at numerous studios in the Denver Metro Area. I am currently looking for professional performance opportunities as that has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember!
