In my brief time doing my PhD I completed a course on Information Visualization. For the final course project, I created Buckets (http://buckets.peterbeshai.com), a web-based visualization tool for looking at shooting performance of players in the NBA over multiple seasons. It became quite popular on Twitter and resulted in me being discovered by the Boston Celtics (among others) and consequently leaving my PhD to go work for them.
