Key Projects and Highlights:-Invited to lecture within the Army’s Masters program in Nutrition, providing lectures on how to bridge exercise physiology and nutrition to enhance performance in the tactical athlete-Served on the Postdoctoral Committee, an interdisciplinary cross-department collaboration for maintaining organizational guardrails for protecting postdoctoral researchers, resulting in lasting relationships and increased visibility within the Institute-Investigating effect of retinoids and anabolic hormones on recovery following volumetric muscle loss: Volumetric Muscle Loss (VML) is best defined as a skeletal muscle injury where a large portion of muscle (>15%) is removed (e.g. shark bite, explosion). Current treatments have involved placing scaffolds within the defect and have not shown to be efficacious. This work assessed the effect of retinoic acid receptor gamma, testosterone enanthate, muscle grafts, and combinations on muscle function recovery following VML-Investigating long-term fate of muscle grafts: Research into muscle grafts as a repair for volumetric muscle loss had only gone out to 8 weeks. This study aimed to further elucidate the long-term fate of the graft relative to fiber pinnation, cross sectional area, and muscle function. Funding was acquired but contract ended before work began-Developing a large animal tourniquet model: Safe tourniquet use has a window of up to 3 hours before permanent loss of function. Given the changing battlefield, transport times to R2 care facilities may exceed this window, prompting investigation into means of extending it. To date, only rodents had been used in developing treatments. This work resulted in a novel system for assessing ischemic injury in pigs, opening a new vein of research

Research and Highlights-“Can you be born a couch potato?”: We had several lines of research to address this question, including the role of endocannabinoids, the effects of oligonucleotide silencing of genes (e.g., calsequestrin, dopamine receptor), and differences between genetic lineages of mice (C57BL/6, C57L/J, C3H-HeJ) on the extent of voluntary wheel running. We found a substantial genetic contribution to likelihood of voluntary exercise-Understanding traumatic brain injuries in college athletes: In collaboration with the Texas A&M football team and the Athletic Training department, we collected urine samples prior to the football season, and serial urine samples in the even of a concussion. We found evidence of brain damage post-concussion out to approximately 3 months, far longer than the standard week before return to play-Alternative methods for testosterone replacement therapy: In collaboration with Mark Cuban, we were seeking to assess the viability of developing a transdermal patch with microneedles as a testosterone delivery system in healthy men over 40. No publications arose from this project, but developed expertise in endocrinology-Sight configuration and firearm accuracy (collaboration with Karl Rehn, Master Marksman): At Karl’s range, we had subjects fire at a standard target using iron sights, iron sights with laser, and red dot sight. Several times salvos were fired from 3 distances and we assessed which configuration resulted in the highest degree of accuracy-Four conference presentations at state and national American College of Sports Medicine conferences on exercise and quality of life, voluntarily physical activity in mice, and in ergogenic aids-Invited to participate in the 2015 DOHA games symposium, a week long think tank for developing new avenues of sharing exercise education, collaborating with high profile individuals (Maria Shriver, Michael Phelps), and aiding in the 2016 Special Olympics in Los Angeles
