About Dr. Pernille Christensen

My research investigates decision making related to sustainability and urban resilience. Recent research projects include: 1) an international collaborative project investigating current considerations for counter-terrorism in the planning, design, and development of crowded places; 2) the analysis of global threat, vulnerability & risk (TVR) assessment models to develop an integrated project delivery model for crowded places and infrastructure development, merging the NSW Gateway Process with TVR assessment tasks to identify critical considerations at each Gateway stage, the stakeholder and professional disciplines that should be engaged, and appropriate mitigation strategies for projects with different levels of risk.3) the analysis of the impact of current and alternative planning regulations (e.g. FAR, building heights) on urban user experience & how incentives may be used to achieve city targets (e.g. reduction in heat island effect | affordable housing); 4) the analysis of decision-making processes in emergency planning & the role of spatial analysis in operations and strategy development; and 5) Developing a Best Practice Guide for End-of-Trip Facilities (EoTF) for Commerical Office Buildings.Previous research includes the: 1) development of a framework for sustainability decision-making and assessment to help industry professionals integrate sustainability into the strategic planning process for their organization, as well as helping built environment professionals understand how other real estate stakeholders perceive sustainability, and its influence on their strategic planning/decision-making process; 2) re-use of surplus shipping containers as an alternative post-disaster housing & community rebuilding solution; 3) working with the Sydney 100 Resilient Cities team to understand potential governance challenges associated with the implementation of the Resilience Strategy, and to explain the decision processes involved with developing a strategic plan for the Metropolitan Sydney area; and 4) development of a Green Building Index.Specialties: Adaptation & Mitigation Strategies to improve urban resilience against social and environmental disruptions; Sustainable Real Estate Investment, Management & Development Decision-Making; Counter Terrorism Protective Security (CTPS) & the role of the built environment in protecting people in urban places; Urban Resilience; Climate Change impact on the built environment; End of Trip Facilities; Emergency Planning;

    I teach the undergraduate 16006 Resilient Urban Development (~60 students) and 15142 Property Development Process - a core class for our post-graduate M. Property Development and M. Planning programs (~ 60-120 students). Both subjects focus on how planners, developers, and other built environment professionals can improve the processes by which urban developments are created to better contribute to urban resilience targets while still meeting required economic hurdles. Students learn how to access and critically analyze planning regulations and other critical decision-informing data (e.g. market data, census data, site information), using findings to inform decision-making to solve an urban issue (16006)/ propose a hypothetical property development site (15142). We challenge students' thinking about environmental, social, economic, and governance systems and structures, and ask students to consider whether, and how, the business-as-usual approach can be improved. What should their role be as future practitioners? Previously, I developed, taught, and coordinated the 16658 Capstone Project: Property Development Analysis and the postgraduate 15146 Sustainable Urban Development. 16658 is for final-year undergraduate students in Property Economics (~120 students). Students apply knowledge learned to complete a due diligence package for a potential development site and propose a base case and two alternative development scenarios. Financial/feasibility modeling is conducted using Argus EstateMaster software and informs a final development solution for the site. Students engage with a real client and a development site under investigation for future development. 15146 SUD investigates how built environment professionals can improve decision-making for sustainable urban development. Students spend one block focusing on planning-related issues, and another block learning about sustainable buildings, assessing a development, and proposing retrofit/upfit improvements.

    I teach the undergraduate elective 16006 Resilient Urban Development (60+/- students) and 15146 Sustainable Urban Development - a core class for our post-graduate M. Property Development and M. Planning programs (class sizes ranging from 65-120). Both subjects focus on how planners, developers, and other built environment professionals can improve the processes by which urban developments are created to better contribute to urban resilience targets. We challenge students' thinking about environmental, social, economic, and governance systems and structures, and ask students to consider whether, and how, the business-as-usual approach can be improved. What should their role be, as future practitioners? A similar approach is used in the postgrad and undergraduate 15142/16005 Property Development Process subject, where students learn how to access and critically analyze planning regulations and other critical decision-informing data (e.g. market data, census data, site information, etc). They use due diligence findings to inform decision-making for a hypothetical property development site. In addition, I have previously developed, taught and coordinated the 16658 Capstone Project: Property Development Analysis. this was delivered to our final year undergraduate students in Property Economics (approximately 120 students). Students apply knowledge learned throughout their course to evaluate a proposed development site. Students first complete a due diligence package, which they use to identify their base case and two alternative development scenarios for the site. They then conduct financial/feasibility modeling using Argus EstateMaster software and propose a development solution for the site. In this subject, students engage with a real client and a real development site being investigated for future development. In addition, I developed and taught a Ph.D. Research Methods Series (Research Critique and Literature Review & Research Methodology and Process).
