Dr. Chu is a biotech entrepreneur, executive and investor with 20+ years experience in biopharma. He has worked with startup, medium and large biotechs in both R&D and corporate roles. He has been founding CEO of three companies: Eclipse Therapeutics, a Biogen spinout acquired in 2012 by Bionomics Ltd.; Proteona, a single-cell precision medicine company acquired by Singleron in 2022; and Eclipse Bioinnovations, an RNA genomics drug discovery company he continues to lead as CEO, co-founded with Prof. Gene Yeo in 2017. He was also an early investor, board director and advisor to the CEO of Discover Echo, acquired by Cellink in 2021 for $120M. Dr Chu co-founded Eclipse Therapeutics in 2011 with Jonathan Lim and Chris Reyes. During this time, Eclipse raised a mult-million dollar seed round, successfully acquired the Lgr5 cancer stem cell program assets from Biogen Idec (BIIB) and launched its Sorrento Valley R&D site. Eclipse Therapeutics was acquired in 2012 in a successful merger with Australian public biotech Bionomics Limited (BNO), providing Eclipse investors with a significant return on investment within 1-2 years. At Bionomics, Dr. Chu was responsible for US operations, and active in both bus dev and translational oncology. During this time, Bionomics successfully advanced their lead CSC antibody BNC101 through to IND approval by the FDA, and built a pipeline of additional CSC drugs. BNC101 completed P1 clinical trials for patients with colorectal cancer in 2018. Prior to Eclipse Therapeutics, Dr. Chu was a scientist at Biogen Idec for 9 years, where he started and led the cancer stem cells research program. He also worked on multiple cancer therapeutic antibody programs in hematology, solid tumors and immunotherapy. While at Biogen Idec, Dr. Chu worked extensively with its New Ventures and BD group to evaluate and acquire new licensing and investment opportunities in oncology. Dr. Chu received his doctorate from the Biomedical Sciences Program at the University of California, San Diego, and a master’s degree from the University of Toronto. His undergraduate degree was in microbiology and immunology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
