About Patrick Hsu

Website: patrickhsu.comPatrick is the Co-Founder and a Core Investigator of the Arc Institute and Assistant Professor of Bioengineering and Deb Faculty Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. A pioneer in the field of CRISPR gene editing, Patrick's research group works at the intersection of biology, technology development, and machine learning to improve human health. His scientific contributions include the discovery of the first programmable recombinases, the Evo AI foundation model trained on genomes, the most widely used tools for CRISPR-based RNA targeting, and the co-invention of CRISPR-Cas9 human genome editing.Patrick also helped to launch Fast Grants, an effort that distributed substantial sums for coronavirus research and demonstrated a powerful model for rapid and effective science funding. As a founder, he has started multiple biotech companies, including Stylus Medicine and Circle Labs. At the Broad Institute and Harvard University, Patrick conducted some of the first studies of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in human cells. As part of the initial team at Editas Medicine, a clinical-stage gene editing company, he built a drug development team to translate CRISPR tools for treating human genetic disorders. He received A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University and his research has been recognized by the NIH Early Independence Award, the MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35, the Rainwater Prize for Innovative Early Career Scientists, the Amgen Young Investigator Award, and the Rose Hill Innovator Award.

  • University Of California, Berkeley
Assistant Professor And Deb Faculty Fellow, Department Of Bioengineering
University Of California, Berkeley Sep 2019 - Present
    Berkeley, Ca, Us
The Hsu Lab aims to understand and manipulate the genetic circuits that control brain and immune cell function to improve human health. We explore the rich biological diversity of nature to create new molecular technologies for genome and transcriptome engineering, perturb complex cellular processes at scale, and develop next-generation gene and cell therapies. Our work is supported by the University of California at Berkeley, the NIH Director's Early Independence Award, the National Institute on Aging, NIGMS, and Dipanjan and Shashikala Deb. We are housed within the Innovative Genomics Institute.
  • Salk Institute For Biological Studies
    Principal Investigator
Salk Institute For Biological Studies Dec 2015 - Oct 2019
    La Jolla, Ca, Us
We are developing and applying novel technologies that make it possible to systematically reverse-engineer cellular processes through rapid and precise perturbations. Our group draws upon diverse approaches from synthetic biology, genomics, and neuroscience for the high-throughput interrogation and control of transcriptional and epigenetic cell states. The goal is to uncover the biological mechanisms behind neurodegenerative disease and complex genetic disorders, as well as to develop tools and therapeutic strategies for their treatment. Our work is supported by the Helmsley Charitable Trust and the NIH Director's Early Independence Award.Transcriptome engineering with RNA-targeting Type VI-D CRISPR effectors Konermann S, Lotfy P, Brideau NJ, Oki J, Shokhirev MN, Hsu PD.
