Paul does not shirk his desires or obligations, continually presses on, looking for areas of improvement and quality.
He loves his family and God and God's family." and "I met Paul in the 1970s at a film seminar. With a fellow pastor, they had traveled over an hour to attend. They both appreciated the worth of the film seminar, but his colleague was bemoaning the long travel time.
Paul said something that stuck in my mind, that traveling was a good opportunity to have fellowship with each other. What impressed me about this comment was the way it revealed his ability to think outside the box and to keep the various priorities of life present in his mind.
The other big impact that he had on me during this time was his elevating worship to the forefront of the Christian life. (This was before the word "worship" came to be equated with singing in certain Christian circles.) This elevation only makes sense given that the most important command is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, etc.
What impressed me about this was his commitment to being thoughtful and purposeful in his life of discipleship and to let "first things" reshape his life.
The third thing that impressed me was his commitment to community and the way he and his family welcomed me -- a young, single, college student -- and allowed me to be a part of their life. This was a manifestation of the second great command to love your neighbor.
This reveals his "outer focus" as opposed to so much "me-centered" thinking that dominates our society, both inside and outside of the church.
I have seen these qualities continually manifested in his life through the years."
