United Nations Military Observer (UNMO) and Deputy Team Leader of a patrol team with Observer Group Lebanon (OGL), United Nations Truce Supervisory Organisation (UNTSO). This position was one of leadership within a multinational team. The position required a willingness and ability to live and work away from home for an extended period in a foreign country and vastly different culture to my own, having to adapt to language barriers and unfamiliar customs and behaviours.As an UNMO with OGL my duties consisted of conducting and leading patrols along the 'border' with Israel to monitor any violations of the truce between the two nations, engaging formally with key leaders within the local communities for the furtherance of a trusting relationship between the UN and the public, and liaison with local military leaders and other government officials to ensure continued harmonious co-operation with these authorities.As the Deputy Team Leader I was responsible for personnel management including rotation of team member duty rostering and leave administration, supervision of the compilation of reports and their review and release to various UN headquarters, for operations and training management and planning, and for ensuring a high level of morale within a team of individuals who were also far removed from home and usual support networks.
