My role is to monitor the changes these efforts have made and perform stewardship… Show more In this role I am leading the water quality monitoring program and floodplain restoration stewardship in the Paulins Kill watershed, NJ. This work is part of TNC-NJ's 10-year Measures and Monitoring Program. The goal of this program is to increase connectivity and restore sites within the Paulins Kill River. Restoration efforts started in 2015, including dam removals and floodplain reforestation efforts. My role is to monitor the changes these efforts have made and perform stewardship where needed to continue restoration.One way to monitor changes due to restoration is through water quality monitoring. I deploy and maintain an in-stream logger array with twelve sites in the Paulins Kill watershed. Data loggers are deployed at theses sites in May and are removed at the end of September, with data recorded every 15-minutes. Loggers are offloaded and maintained every two weeks during this period. Temperature and dissolved oxygen levels are recorded at each site and turbidity is recorded at sites associated with dam removal projects. During dam removals, turbidity loggers are used to check that the sediment passing downstream does not exceed healthy levels. We also sample macroinvertebrates and perform RBA habitat assessments. Before sampling I participated in a field audit conducted by NJ-DEP. Macroinvertebrate and habitat scores are important water quality indicators when looking at overall health of the watershed. Finally, I work to maintain the floodplain restoration sites, coordinating and performing stewardship on the planted trees to remove support stakes and bark guards. I organize volunteer events to teach people about floodplains and have them assist with the stewardship of these sites. From there I tagged and released 44 individuals and monitored their movements, maintaining an acoustic array for nine months in an effort to detect the tagged individuals. I coordinated with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to have volunteers assist with data collection for their yearly rainbow smelt monitoring program. The pilot for this collaboration was in spring 2021, and in 2022 we integrated their feedback and created a formal training for this work. The University of New Hampshire, CRV, and NHFG have continued this collaboration and continue to bring volunteers out to assist with rainbow smelt data collection.Finally, during my time as a master’s student I also collected rainbow smelt otoliths and water samples from Great Bay Estuary, NH. The otoliths have been analyzed by The University of New England as part of another graduate project. The water samples were analyzed for trace microchemical analysis and are being used to create a description of the elemental composition of Great Bay surface water along the salinity gradient. While the elemental description is beneficial on its own, it can also be used alongside the otolith elemental analysis to validate signatures along the salinity gradient and show life-long movement patterns of rainbow smelt. In this role I assisted with stream macroinvertebrate sampling using surber, drift, and kick nets along a transect. Samples were preserved for later identification (see Stream Ecology Technician position). I also used a flow meter to determine flow along cross-section stream transect. Flow rates were used to determine amount of water passing through nets during deployment, to then determine catch per unit effort (CPUE).
