About Pablo Emiliano Canton Ojeda
I am a researcher and science communicator specialized in the use of biotechnology as means to control insect populations with importance in agriculture and human health. With a mixture of training in biochemical and molecular biology lab techniques as well as genomic data analysis and handling, I can work in multidisciplinary projects and can translate information between groups. I am a firm believer that better synergy and feedback between research and community is possible, and that as a scientist I can play an important role advancing knowledge and leveraging it to alleviate the impact of insects on human activities. I participate in science communication, outreach and advocacy initiatives and events, and I co-founded an NGO for this purpose, and serve as coordinator in several of our endeavors. With human population set to rise to 9 billion by 2050, the need to improve food production and quality is essential. If we can learn to apply the brakes on one insect species, we may be able to step on the accelerator on another. I'm also interested in harnessing the knowledge of insect biology to increase their use as a more sustainable and alternate protein source in our diets. Being able to interphase between science, industry, government, and public will be crucial to make this transition.
