Ten years after “retirement” from Meridian International Center, I continue to find great satisfaction working as a seasonal program officer at MIC, helping to design and implement projects for participants in the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program. After writing three books and numerous chapters and articles on aspects of the Arabian Peninsula countries, I have decided to cultivate intellectual gardens closer to home. My brother, Donald, sister, Ellen, and I have established a 501-c (3) foundation to preserve and use for broadly educational purposes our great grandfather John Murdoch’s collection of over 3000 photographic images on glass plate negatives. The images date from 1883 to 1925, representing use of then innovative techniques and featuring portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes from Boston to San Francisco. In addition to planning exhibits for schools, libraries, and other venues, we are researching and writing about a fascinating ancestor, who was senior scientist in the Smithsonian Institution’s 1879-81 Point Barrow Expedition, and served as its librarian, 1887-92. With my Filipina wife Aida, I am involved in numerous cultural activities of the Washington area Philippine-American community, including participation in traditional dances and painting for public exhibition. We have developed a fondness for river cruises, recently exploring the Danube, Volga, and Rhine rivers and their environs. I am currently acting in a forthcoming indie film drama, playing the part of the abbot of a medieval monastery
