Undergraduate research conducted at the Laboratory of Biophysics and Soft Matter of KU Leuven (Belgium). It was inspired by the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which is a disease characterized by an increase in the release of histamine molecules in the small intestine. The aim was to develop a medical device based on a biomimetic impedimetric sensor, to be used in conjunction with gastrointestinal catheters, for the detection and measurement of those molecules' concentration. It would be a reliable and cost-effective way to early detect disease marking molecules and provide faster medical diagnosis. The results were conclusive, attesting the promising capacity of molecularly imprinted polymers for biosensing applications and, most importantly, the combination between those and a catheter setup for medical diagnostic equipments.
