Project Manager
In October 2008 I became the Project Manager for the development of a Content Management System CMS) for one of the on-line leader newspaper in Spain (www.periodistadigital.com). After a careful study of the commercial alternatives available at the moment the client and I concluded that their best interest would be to develop a CMS customized to their workflow, one of the main characteristics of the system being the generation of static content in order to increase the performance of the site and reduce the size of the supporting server farm, with the subsequent operational cost savings. The system was put in production and is currently in use.
Development Manager
From August 2007 to September 2008 I was the Development Manager for the Internet area of the Data Warehouse project that CGI made for Vodafone Spain. Apart from managing the ongoing projects and planning the new ones, one of the key aspects within this role was to manage the client relationship in order to make the business grow. Among the challenges that I had to manage were to ensure the professional growth of the development team members so that they could assume new responsibilities and organizing the knowledge transfer between the development and maintenance teams. My intrapreneural activities within this role included putting in place the necessary tools and procedures for helping team leaders and members effectively managing the development activities and reporting to the upper management.
Functional Architect
I joined the Functional Architecture team in the Product Engineering department at Vodafone Spain in December 2002, where I contributed to designing the architectures supporting the products and services that Vodafone launched to the market. I assisted as well in the development of medium and long term strategies in the IT area, an example of which was the proposal of a platform for launching promotions that allowed to reduce the time to market of these offerings. The platform was eventually deployed following the directives contemplated in the proposal and became instrumental in Vodafone's product and services market strategy.
Business Development
In April 2002 I became responsible for the preparation of the proposal for developing an Advanced Rating Engine for the Spanish mobile operator Amena. The proposal was eventually accepted by the client and the system was successfully deployed and installed at Amena.I also coordinated the business proposal of a Billing System for STA (Andorra's mobile operator), which included leading a multi-disciplinar team in Spain and Portugal, as well as managing the relationship with the client and the Billing System provider (CSG) that was selected for the proposal.
Technical Architect
In December 2000 I became the development team leader/technical architect of the team that was building a Customer Care & Billing pre-paid system for the leading Portuguese GSM operatort. I assumed the responsibility of the technical implementation of product releases 2.1.1 and 2.2,and the major milestones during this period included the delivery of the GPRS rating engine to the Portuguese operatorIn April 2001 I joined the team implementing an Arbor BP & OM customized system for the leading Portuguese GSM operator. My specific responsibility in the project was to provide technical guidance for the porting of the Order Management customizations of the project to a Sun Solaris platform. This effort, which included the porting of 21 requirements including shared libraries in 8 weeks, was completed and delivered to the client on time.As a recognition of the work performed during this period I was promoted to Principal within the AMS organization.
Team Leader
In May 1999 I joined the development team of the Tapestry Customer Care & Billing system that American Management Systems was building in Düsseldorf for one of the leading German fixed-wire operators. In January 2000 I became the team leader of the Order Processing module of the system, built using Expert System technologies (ILOG), and my responsibilities on this role were to manage the team in order to ensure that these components went smoothly into production and to support and maintain them in the post-production phase. The most outstanding tasks and milestones during this period were, among others, assuring the completeness of the knowledge transfer process between the most experienced members of the team which were leaving and new members, the refactoring of the (off-line) scheduler module and placing the 2.0b release of the system into production on July 2000.
Technical Coordinator
At the end of 1998 I became the Technical Coordinator of CRAFT BES2-5542 ACT project, funded by the European Union. The aim of this project was the development of a prototype for an autonomous location system of freight containers operational within the territory of the EU plus the complete technical specifications and commercialization plans for mass-producing the system. In order to achieve this aim, several technologies and services already existing in the market with low maintenance and exploitation costs were used. The prototype of the project consisted of 1) an on-board device using GPS technology for locating the container and GSM technology for communicating with the control center and 2) the control center itself, which was meant to integrate relational databases and a GIS system. The ACT project started in the middle of December 1998 and is was due to finish in 18 months; the first stage of the project involving the design and specifications for the system was completed in April 1999.
Workpackage Leader
From April 1996 to January 1998, I took part in ESPRIT #22130 DIXIT project as workpackage leader for the problem solving workpackage of the project, which involved the technical coordination on this area. This project aimed at producing a framework for developing distributed intelligent applications for the strategic management of industrial plants, and like HINT, a consortium of European companies participated in it. The main areas of interest in this project were, intelligent systems, distributed architectures and object oriented design to deal with plant safety, maintenance, production continuity, quality and environmental aspects, assisting the plant staff in optimizing all these objectives. The system was installed at Repsol’s petrochemical complex at Tarragona, Spain and at the cement plant owned by Lafarge Ciments in Contes, France, and like HINT, received good reviews from the European Commission
Project Manager
In 1994, I became the Project Manager of the DEM project, which the IIC developed for Repsol Butano (gas branch of Repsol) and whose aim was to assist the managerial staff of the company in the decision making process by providing them with a market analysis tool. In order to accomplish this aim, the system implemented several statistical and AI techniques (expert systems, neural networks) for market segmentation, trend analysis and fraud detection. As a project manager, I managed to build a strong relationship with the client and ensured that the system was deployed and put into production timely in the beginning of 1996.
Worpackage Leader
In 1993 I joined the ESPRIT #6443 HINT project, a R&D project funded by the European Comission under the ESPRIT framework, where I became workpackage leader of the project’s Expert System Workpackage. The aim of the HINT project was the integration of heterogeneous artificial intelligent techniques for the development of intelligent systems in the process control industry. The main results of the project were the development of an integration methodology, an integration architecture and the development of several reusable modules, each of them corresponding to an artificial intelligence technique, plus a toolkit to customize them to specific plants. The techniques covered by the project demonstrator were expert systems, neural networks, fuzzy logic and model based reasoning. The HINT project was considered a success by the European Commission and received very good reviews.
Knowledge Engineer
My professional career began in 1992 in the Industry Area of the ‘Instituto de Ingeniería del Conocimiento’ (IIC), taking part in the development of the MIP project as a knowledge engineer. The aim of the MIP project was to develop an intelligent control system for a petrochemical reactor owned by REPSOL, S.A. (leading petrochemical company in Spain) to perform monitoring, alarm detection and assistance to the operators. The MIP system was deployed in the beginning of 1993 and has been running continuously since then showing very satisfactory results.
