Leader at Liberton Young Life clubThis position involves attending weekly Monday-night clubs where I and other club leaders meet with a regular group of teenagers and any friends they choose to bring along. The aim of these clubs is to give the teenagers a place where they can feel free to be themselves with adults who they can trust and friends that they want to spend time with. The clubs generally take the format of a three-hour session where the kids can choose whether they want to talk to a leader about something going on at home or just spend a few hours playing sports, and this freedom to choose is a central aim of the club. During clubs I generally carry out educational talks, run small-scale sporting activities, or take part in skits for those simply looking to enjoy themselves for a few hours.

Work Crew/Summer Staff, Young Life summer campsMy time at these camps involves spending one month assisting in the running and maintenance of multiple week-long residential camps held for high-school aged children and teenagers. These camps bring together hundreds of new campers each week from all over Europe to Loch Monzievaird in Scotland to spend time getting to know new people and bond through daily outdoors activities, such as cross-country biking and canoeing. As a cabin leader, I am responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the campers in my care at all hours of the day and night for the duration of their stay, dealing with timings for activities and any problems which arise with the activities or the campers themselves. When the volunteer roles rotate, and the campers I have brought along from my weekly clubs leave, I move to the kitchen where I am involved in all of the cooking required to feed those who attend the camp. I also help as an outdoor crew member, assisting with the maintenance of any equipment or facilities used during the activities the campers take part in, as well the construction and deconstruction of the camp at the beginning and end of the summer session.

Leader for Stage n Slam Edinburgh summer campsIn this role I am a member of the leadership team running day camps during week-long Stage n Slam camps, which take place in the Liberton area of Edinburgh. These camps are held during the school summer holidays each year and involve spending a week working with hundreds of high-school aged children and teenagers who attend the camp while carrying out different activities on each of the six days that the camp runs for. My main role during these camps is to coach some of the sporting activities including football, rugby and basketball sessions. In addition to this, my more general roles include caring for the teenagers while travelling between venues for activities as well as ensuring the overall safety of each person under my care for the duration of the daily sessions.

Messy Church volunteerMessy Church sessions are held on the first Saturday of each month, where children and their families from the surrounding areas spend the day taking part in activities set up and run by volunteers such as myself, mainly focused on fun – and messy – arts and crafts activities for the whole family to take part in. In this role I primarily assist with setup and tear down of equipment as well as running the face painting stall.

I volunteered for six months in the Sick Kid’s Hospital as part of my silver Duke of Edinburgh award, where my primary role was to run the WRVS (renamed to the Royal Voluntary Service) café. In addition to this I was given the opportunity to spectate multiple sessions in the radiology department of the hospital.
