About Peggy Foreman

My career path has taken me on so many rewarding adventures. I have worked on whale watching boats all throughout the Pacific (AK, WA, and HI), have taught in the K-12 system and community college system for over 10 years (hardest job on the planet, but the most rewarding), worked as a communications specialist for NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region specializing in education and outreach, moved to Honolulu in January 2017 to work for Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperatives, one of 22 Landscape Conservation Collaborative Networks for the Fish and Wildlife Service. In Feb. of 2018, PICCC closed its doors due to federal funding. On March 1st, I started with NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Regional Office. I look forward to meeting our partners and our stakeholders to build resilient communities and help conserve all that is dear to these islands, our coral reefs, our local watersheds, native bird species to our charismatic megafauna such as cetaceans, monk seals, and turtles to just name a few. When it comes to promoting life long learning, I believe it stems from home, with strong community leaders, with role models, and compassionate people that make connections between home life and how our actions impact our local rivers, watersheds, and ultimately oceans. I am new to the island of O'ahu and am looking forward to meeting my conservation partners, my hui really, to continue finding new ways to promote climate and environmental literacy and start conversations about what we can do at home to build resiliency, but I also look forward to supporting Malama groups and I making a difference in my community. I am also proud to be back in the Hawaiian Islands and thankful for the work ahead. I am thankful to have a strong family, great friends and colleagues that inspire me to grow!

I am honored to be working with NOAA Fisheries Staff and reaching out to schools and our communities to share the work we do. Engaging young people in ocean literacy and striving to make connections between school, home and their local watersheds. In 2012, we received three educational grants one focusing on Lake Ozette Sockeye Salmon and working with the outer coast schools. We invited them to Lake Ozette to see the sockeye in the fall and learn about their life history and some of the recovery projects within the watershed. The students were asked to reach out to their communities to better understand the importance of these fish and create a video highlighting this work. Another grant was to strengthen our marine mammal kits, so we produced a short 7 min. video that highlights 6 marine mammal species from our area. We also produced a fabulous 3-D comic strip to promote our Share the Shore campaign; purchased a 23' inflatable killer whale to help bring attention to Southern Resident killer whale recovery. We obtained a harbor porpoise skeleton and created a canvas display which we can now take to schools for students to articulate and learn more about our stranding network and anatomy/physiology of these local cetaceans. Lastly, we have also been working the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla on a Salmon and Steelhead curriculum for late elementary students which we are very excited to help contribute to.
  • Ocean Research College Academy
Marine Biology, Oceanography, And Ocean Technology Instructor
Ocean Research College Academy Mar 2008 - Jun 2010
    Everett, Washington, United States
Ocean Technology course, students conducted ocean sampling using standard oceanographic tools and techniques. Students collected and analyzed temperature, density, currents, salinity, turbidity, dissolved gases and solids at 4 locations in Possession Sound on monthly cruises. Students learned navigational skills, underwater camera techniques, and continued to modify protocols in collecting data in Puget Sound. Students obtained plankton and ocean floor sediments, while also determining depth and location. Analysis and interpretation of water and sediment data was central to the course, as well as support in writing scientific papers. My Oceanography course was an introduction to the study of oceans with an emphasis on our local marine ecosystem in the Puget Sound. Students gained a basic understanding of biological oceanography, physical and chemical oceanography, and marine geology through hands-on learning experiences and oceanographic sampling with boat-based research. Each student fine tuned protocols, analyzed data and worked towards a year long study of Possession Sound. Conducting research with a team of colleagues and presenting findings to a variety of audiences was central to O.R.C.A.’s mission. My Marine Biology class was often taught on beaches throughout the Salish Sea, the Straits of Juan de Fuca, and the outer coast. This course focused on the major invertebrate phyla and their representatives with a special emphasis on the structural and functional homologies, their phylogeny, life histories, physiology, and ecological adaptations. All of my courses included lab components.
