Independent strategy consultant & policy advisor with a passion for social impact. Across my career I’ve worked in multi-functional teams to tackle complex problems. For the past ten years I’ve advised school education systems on policy, strategy and support for schools and teachers—all in support of lifting student outcomes. The strengths that underpin my impact are:• being a systems thinker who takes the time to listen and understand the issues before jumping to conclusions; • a diverse analytical toolkit that blends quantitative, qualitative and financial analysis into powerful evidence-based stories; • reframing complex issues and creating simple but compelling visualisations that help people see the problem in new ways; • translating promising ideas into comprehensive and implementable solutions that deliver social impact and financial benefits;• compelling and clear communication in workshops, conferences and boardrooms, on radio and TV, and in 400 word op-eds through to major public reports; • a track record of aligning stakeholders around a common vision that balances competing interests. I’m passionate about improving social and educational outcomes for Australia — especially for disadvantaged and First Nations Australians — by designing systems that empower people and helping them build capabilities to succeed in the lives and careers they choose.I’m best known for my work in school education policy, which was recognised by my peers in 2021 when I was made a National Fellow of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders. During my six years at Grattan Institute, I wrote eight major policy reports, was a frequent media commentator and was twice published in The Conversation Yearbook “50 standout reads from Australia’s top thinkers”.More broadly across my career I’ve built a reputation for creating innovative solutions to complex problems that have stumped others, often by reframing the problem in a way that enables a new solution. This ranges from playing a significant public role in Australia’s 2017 school funding debate, to helping to develop a new concept of adaptive strategy at The Boston Consulting Group, all the way back to my multi-disciplinary PhD at Harvard University where I was an early contributor to the field of systems biology.
