About Pelf-Nyok Chen

My primary interests are turtles, research, science communication, education and outreach activities, women empowerment, and not necessarily in that order.Since 2004, I have been involved in turtle research and conservation, primarily focussing on the Southern River Terrapin, a critically endangered freshwater turtle. In addition to having 20 years of experience in research and conservation, I am also experienced in conservation education. I have conducted more than 150 Turtle Camps, and have benefitted at least 30,000 students in Malaysia. In 2011, I co-founded Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS), the first turtle NGO in the country, and am currently serving as its Executive Director. In the same year, I initiated a community-based River Terrapin conservation project in Kemaman, Terengganu, which led to me being named the Commonwealth Point of Light for Malaysia award from the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2018, I was awarded the first Ph.D. in Zoology in the field of non-marine turtles from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. I was funded through a regional scholarship from CIMB Foundation and numerous research grants from Malaysian and foreign agencies. In 2019, I initiated a women empowerment programme to empower women from the local communities to be financially sustainable. This is achieved through the development and manufacturing of turtle batik merchandise which we also sell to the wider audience to generate funds to sustain the non-profit I co-founded.I continue to mentor and train student interns to build their capacity to be leaders in the future.

In recent years, I have managed to secure numerous grants from the Malaysian Wildlife Conservation Foundation, US Fish and Wildlife Services, Turtle Survival Alliance, the National Conservation Trust Fund for Natural Resources, and the Asian Species Action Partnership, to name a few. I have partnered with researchers from local and foreign universities in studying the various aspects of conservation, including nesting ecology, head-starting, conservation genetics, population studies, reproduction and translocation/re-wilding of turtles. I enjoy exploring and securing meaningful collaborations/ partnerships with like-minded parties. In 2023, we’ve partnered with Watsons Malaysia, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Blackmores, Melvita, Petronas, and logistics companies such as Ocean Network Express and Bollore Logistics. I am constantly seeking corporate/ bulk orders for our turtle-batik merchandise. These orders do not only generate income to support the our activities, they also provide a main source of income to numerous women in the local communities, which in turn, support their respective families. As a mother, I am passionate in educating the younger generation. I have conducted numerous “Turtle Camps” for students from kindergartens to primary schools; and given talks, webinars and virtual tours to college/ university undergraduates and the public. I take every opportunity to communicate the science that I do to the public, be it in the form of scientific presentations, letters written to newspapers, radio interviews, and writing book chapters. In 2022, I co-authored a children’s colouring book on freshwater turtles of Malaysia.I continue to provide mentorship and training to student interns because I believe in building the capacity of our future leaders.
