Profile bio

About Patricia S. (Suzi) Elzie-Tuttle, Mlis

I am eternally curious about how things work (let’s be honest, you don’t go off to college to study mechanical engineering if you’re not) so my everyday life is built around learning, research and gaining deeper insight. I like to figure things out, understand why something is the way it is, and get to the bottom of rumor, promise, and innuendo. When my road at USC curved away from engineering onto the path of creative writing, musical theatre and library science, it was a turn that set me firmly in pursuit of information and data in all its forms. In my graduate work, I focused on information literacy and what we call "Information Seeking Behaviors." I researched how and where people got their information as well as their ability to determine if the information is legitimate, relevant, and current.Of course, with a Masters in Library and Information Science, books will always be a significant part of my life. I harmonize my day job in prospect development with my side work for Book Riot, the largest independent editorial website about books in North America. Recommending books to tens of thousands of people is a dream, and it's pretty cool to be able to call myself a Professional Book Recommender. At one point, I was the consulting librarian for my local comic book shop and helped curate a section for Young Adults.I do not claim to know all the answers, but I'm confident I can find them.

Listed skills include Writing, Development, Powerpoint, Social Media, and 26 others.

Enthusiastic Encouragement & Dubious Advice

Oakland, California, United States

"You got to make your own worlds; you got to write yourself in." - Octavia E. ButlerThe self-help genre is severely lacking in content for people who look like me, love like me, and live like me; so I'm writing myself in.

Assistant Director, Major Gifts

Berkeley, California

Primary areas of focus: Biological Sciences including the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI, where CRISPR lives), Mathematical & Physical Sciences, and the Berkeley School of Education. My duties include the typical Prospect Research Analyst duties of identifying potential donors, supporting the success of the fundraisers and the university, data analysis, and frequent strategy sessions. What I really love, though, is figuring out what story the data tells and then telling that story. I enjoy making connections between colleagues and spotting potential relationships between the remarkable research happening on campus and the donors who are ready to change the world. I'm deeply connected to the parts of my work where I can help my colleagues communicate better and where I can impact the work in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice in my department and beyond.I can talk about all the wealth I identified, the puzzles I solved, and the data integrity I supported; however, I'm proudest of my work as a mentor, both to other people on my immediate team and to two brilliant people who work in different parts of campus. I've mentored them through position changes and reclassification, interpersonal work challenges, and harmonizing their day jobs and their personal lives.
