Ashanti Development works to eradicate poverty among isolated villages of subsistence farmers in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. We are a volunteers' charity, and pay no wages or fees of any kind outside Ghana.One of my jobs is to find individuals, companies or groups of friends to sponsor whole villages into development. We ask the donor first to fund household latrines - starting prices for a small hamlet can be as low as £1,000 - after which the mortality rate drops considerably. After that, provided the village agrees, the donor can help in any way they like. They give us the money when it suits them, and we do the work and send back photos, reports and financial accounts as often as they want. We also encourage the donor to visit their village and make friends with the people. It also gives the village a chance to show how eternally grateful they are.
