As a key member of the Clinical Risk and Safety Team within the Quality, Safety and Risk Service at Auckland DHB, I oversee portfolios across the Starship Hospital, Regional Cancer and Blood and Patient Management Services, while providing expert advice, support and guidance to manage and mitigate clinical quality issues and risks. I facilitate in-depth adverse event reviews for SAC 1 and 2 patient incidents, with a focus on existing systems and processes to identify risks and develop robust and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) recommendations to minimise the risk of repeat incidents. Prepare and present comprehensive reports with findings and recommendations to the hospital’s governance committee.With a focus on quality improvements, I provide critical oversight of all reported patient incidents across the aforementioned directorates, identify themes and trends and explore new ways to eliminate those risks using innovation, idea-sharing and best practice. Escalated serious incidents and clinical risks and presented comprehensive quality reports to Senior Leadership Teams Directorate quality meetings.Alongside my focus on clinical effectiveness, risk and quality, I have also excelled as a passionate advocate of Just Culture practices as one of ten certified Just Culture trainers within Auckland DHB, involved in training and empowering people managers to understand and respond to different human behaviours within a socio-technic system design with the aim of creating a psychologically safe work environment so we can learn from mistakes, improve and minimise the risk of harm to patients, staff and organisation.

In this role, I was responsible for managing a broad and varied portfolio of clinical products for 4 Northern Region DHBs. I coordinated, planned and managed clinical product evaluations in a practical setting, led the implementation of new and standardised products and achieved buy-in with medical personnel when implementing product substitutions and replacements. Successfully led the evaluation and implementation of a new fleet of hospital beds within ADHB and WDHB.Collaborating with clinical staff and managers at all levels of the hospital, I determined specific product requirements, sourced innovative product solutions across a range of suppliers and negotiated fair and favourable terms thereby managing financial constraints.With a focus on compliance, I championed compliance initiatives when critically reviewing new and existing clinical products, navigated requirements within the constraints of the DHBs and wider health sector and bridged the gap between hospital and staff requirements, supplier issues and regulatory compliance. I also worked tirelessly to ensure that the hospitals were able to meet their operational needs through product substitutions and improved stock management due to backorders and product recalls.During this time I also held the role as treasurer for the national PEHNZ (Product Evaluators Health New Zealand) group.
