I find that the thesis excellently combines Ricoeur’s philosophical theory of the self, a conceptual framework situated at the highest level of abstraction, with the prototypical picture of organizational coaching in general and management-based coaching in particular. Considering the growing importance acquired by discourses of the self, both in private life and in the different contexts of work, the purpose of the thesis becomes very important: to analyze and criticize the tacit assumptions made in organizational approaches to coaching in relation to the structure of consciousness, and hence, of the blurred conceptions of the form and functioning of the self behind these approaches. Per makes a very sharp and elaborate investigation of the both theoretical and practical aporias of self produced by the general conflict between the employee’s need of autonomy and the employer’s desire for total control so deeply integrated in the recent strategies of self-management. The thesis demonstrates the capacity to cope with very difficult philosophical thinking in such a way that its content is made prolific for the practical problems of organizational work. I am sure that consultants all over the field should profit from reading it. The thesis attests to a very systematic mind that is able to cope with deeply complicated relations on different levels of abstraction and reality and present them with lucid and schematic acumen to the reader.
