Grey Matters is a performance-focused company that offers a range of applied consultancy in sport, business, performing arts, etc. To date I have personally worked with over 70 world and/or olympic medallists, high performing athletes in a variety of professional sports and performers in business, the military, dance and music.

Director of ICAP - the Institute of Coaching and Performance. We are a group who research, examine and consult on all aspects of performance promotion across different domains.

• I led the development, deployment and direction of a complete restructure to the performance pathway, resulting in greater integration with key stakeholder organisations and effective progression of young athletes to elite level. The new structure was designed on a ‘built to last’ basis to meet both short term (2008, 2012) imperatives whilst also establishing a new AND sustainable performance culture for the sport.• Latterly, and reflecting an extended portfolio, I worked with national athletics organisations and sports institutes on the development of new working practices to optimise returns on a win-win basis, and enhance the change process through greater coherence and buy-in.• I was responsible for a budget of over £7M per annum, leadership of 64 support staff covering 200 athletes nationwide and service direction/evolution with national sports institutes and specialist consultants.• The restructured performance pathway, coupled with improved teamwork and accountability, helped to progress the team from 24th to 5th (World then Olympic) 21st to 3rd (World Indoors) and 12th to 1st (European Team).

• In Edinburgh, I led my Department from College (34 staff) to University Department (83 staff) status. This involved a major change management exercise, focussed on initiating a new culture of academic excellence whilst integrating new members into an emergent team structure building on the well established traditions of the department.• Increased independent income from £8,500 p.a. to over £1M p.a., enabling us to support our own change process through team-selected initiatives and reinforcement.

• In Manchester, I initiated development and training partnerships with a diversity of external bodies, including sporting (e.g. PFA), military (APTC) and governmental (DfES, DCMS) organisations.• I initiated and set up an independent commercial arm for the sport, exercise and health expertise of the department.

I established strong programmes in research and support, whilst expanding the portfolios of my departments. For example: • I led the development of bespoke educational pathways for the Irish Government, designed to meet their needs in sport and physical activity promotion.• By invitation, I served as a visiting academic to Penn State University.
