Our kids were getting charged an insane amount of money to not even place with their lambs at the county fair. As we sat there in the show arena in 2009 watching the repeated outcome of the placing of the animals my husband and I came to the conclusion that that would be their last time purchasing lambs, that we needed to raise them. At that time I had just had our daughter Addisyn so now we were raising them for the three kids. Thus, the beginning of Perkins Show Lambs. Obviously, a bit different than the registered Hampshire breeding sheep Andy was use to raising, but still the same operation. He knew how to feed, he knew what kind of set up we needed, he had all the basics of the vet medicine, lambing, etc figured out. Our property was equipped with corrals and a shop so we were okay with our set up, but we had to find the animals. What started as six breeding ewes is now seventy! Through the years the whole family has adapted to changing trends in the industry. We have rigorously culled ewes and added genetically by buying bred ewes. We have learned how to properly feed a show lamb, something again that changes as every animal does get fed differently based on body condition. Our networking with other breeders has continued as traveling to different shows allows your to get to know people and know which ones you want to surround yourself and your brand with. Which people are doing things ethically and which ones not so much. We began marketing to local kids offering quality animals at an affordable price. Which also led to us being local 4H leaders! We now influence and help shape the future of agriculture. It has been fun to get to know a lot of the youth in our area and in the sheep industry and be positive role models for them.
