Update: In early 2014 the Door County Boys & Girls Club was named the best small market club in the United States. Fulfilling a goal I put out there at a dark time in the clubs history. The club has now won this award twice.Back story...After being a 'reserve' board member for years in late spring 2010 I became Chairman/Pres. when needed due to our Chairs medical issues. After close observation started pressing for big changes & even bigger goals. Leading the rebuilding of the organization from the bottom up. Seven months after appointing Mr. Dave Pape as Interim Director, who diligently helped right the ship, we initiated and lead a national search for an Executive Director/Chief Professional Officer. When we found that person I tasked her with creating the best most effective small market program in the country - giving her lots of latitude and the directive to dream big and execute. Create a club for the long term good of the Door County family community - a truly impactful organization. With a refreshed board & focused director, we got results. One metric, attendance, it increased about 500% first-year changes and the org is impacting kids lives even more. Our team's programs also became benchmarks for others which I suggested was a sure sign of success. Proud now that my own daughter now attends the club and loves it.

Took over an under-performing family asset and turned it into a noted family diner, increasing sales by almost 400% in a three year period. A pure focus on delighting the customer.Applied innovative marketing and “Lean Management” principles.Developed a sophisticated application screening process designed to screen applicants down to top 10% prior to starting the interview process. Resulting in turnover rate far below the industry average.Developed memorable Team Cherry training program and elaborate tip sharing program addressing the living wage issue in 1996 - this when exposed to the Disney Institute, they asked if they could introduce the model to their restaurant management groups as they had such a hard time with turn-over. This, and other strategies we employed helped to attract and retain some of the top talent in our market.Served as many as 500 people a day with our award winning, full-service teams and just 42 seats.Voted ‘Best of Wisconsin’ Cafe’/Diner’ 3 times (the first time in our 3rd year) and ‘Restaurant of the Year’ on one occasion. In all situations, our team was acknowledged/rewarded for these wins.Owned and managed multiple units & employed a team of over 70 at peak.Sold our flagship SB unit in 2010 after 4 years of painful city infrastructure construction mismanagement .Perry's Cherry™ had become and is a big part of the Door County experience for years often referred to as a Door County Institution. Perry was humbled to learn in 2012 a coupled of longtime customers loved Perry's so much they have named their child after our place. Vision, innovation, research, strategic planning, raising capital, team development. Built one of the most innovative restaurant prototypes in the country in the Shadow of Lambeau Field. Our concept was to built as franchise restaurant prototype. The vision of our Retro/Jetsons - diner blending the 1950's with the 2050's. An experimental | lab | research location for the small format restaurant of the future. Here we introduced and applied many innovations. Intelligently refining the logistics’ of the system formerly known as a 'drive-through' for the digital 21st Century - a national restaurant builder called our design the most useful restaurant innovation he's seen in 30 years. This by synchronizing the guests wait time to their specific order and method of order. A patent pending, multi-lane, fully efficient drive through / pick up window process that uses traffic control and uncommon sense. This restaurant 'lab' built in 2004 to work through some issues while cloaking other intended future uses - namely hydrogen dispensing stations & fast-charging electric stations. (Future planning - turned out we were way too early) Imagine, human energy and sustainable transportation energy in the same station. We did and it's time is coming.94% of guests rating their experience at this location a 10 on a 1-10 net promoter score system. Not enough. Underfunded and wrong market - tough lessons for me.
