Application Support Lead

London, England, United Kingdom

I was providing support for the main line of business application on the IBM i / iSeries / AS/400. Many years of bespoke code development required a reverse engineering approach in order to provide solutions to issues encountered.I also pro-actively conducted a review of IBM i security, highlighted areas that required improvement, and created a plan of works to achieve these improvements on both IBM i and other systems that interfaced with it.

Sep 2022 - Jul 2023

Senior Technical Analyst

I provided oversight of, and support for the IBM i / iSeries / AS/400 server, while also supporting Windows server and desktop. I largely used Powershell to automate processes that were being carried out manually, allowing silent management of the desktop PC estate, and greatly reducing ticket volumes for the first line support staff. Some of the pieces of work I was proud of: the silent removal of the many old versions of software and deployment of standardised software suites. This included MS Office versions, the IBM i desktop client (old versions of which are notoriously difficult to remove without user intervention); Java standardisation to enable the use of a standard set of Windows firewall rules; and supervising the upgrade of all 15 IBM i LPAR's.But the most challenging was updating anti-virus software where the tamper protection key for the old software was unknown. Before anyone worries about the security of their organisation, I am not selling my knowledge on the dark web, but I will make it available to your company if you have an opportunity you think I'd be a good fit for.

Senior Systems Analyst

Nippon Express Global Logistics Europe

Programming, and supervising other programmers. RPG, RPGLE, SQLRPG on the IBM i / iSeries / AS/400 (choose the name depending on your vintage). For those who know RPG; multi-member files with millions of records per member and 50+ logical files! For those who don't, this was both a production DB and data warehouse. What piece of work was I particularly pleased with? Taking the initiative to add data integrity checks to a program program that processed CSV files. This reduced the number of helpdesk tickets considerably, and on several occasions prevented the import of spurious data to the main DB with all the attendant remediation work that entails.
