AmeriCorps Position with the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership at EID, transfered to California Tahoe Conservancy when EID had layoffs that affected my position.Completed various environmental education tasks including classroom visits, event tabling and demonstrations. Also collected and reported greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the climate change commission for all of EID's facilities and operations including treatment plants, fleet, satellite offices and park operations, and headquarters. Helped organize and conduct watershed group meetings and attended CABY (Consumnes, American, Bear, and Yuba Watersheds) Integrated Regional Water Management Plan (IRWMP) meetings. Mediated meetings with local tribes to help plan a restoration day at the EID Sly Park facility. Wrote components of grant applications and helped with grant invoicing for various open grants operated by EID. Planned 3 different watershed tour events each to be held twice, in the lower, middle, and upper South Fork American Watershed. Arranged transportation, speakers, tour stops, schedules, and advertising of all three events and then prepared all of the information to be handed off to the watershed coordinator when I was moved to a new AmeriCorps site. The events all not only still occurred but also were successful and got good reviews despite my inability to be there.
Mauritania
Served in Mauritania, West AfricaCompleted various educational seminars in french with local language translators on the preparation of mosquito repellent from local ingredients for malaria prevention, hand washing, oral rehydration salts for dehydrated infants, and the preparation of moringa powder used to add nutritional value to meals. Also worked with girls mentoring centers to give talks and present slide shows on the dangers of skin-lightening cream to young girls in Selibaby and the surrounding area. Served as a technical resource to volunteers whose needs assessment determined projects in water quality and engineering. Working with local NGO and government partners to begin a Positive Deviance Hearth project in Selibaby with the goal of opening a sustainable education center for young mothers about raising healthy children. Wrote grant applications and began planning a kick-off training event in Selibaby before evacuation, after I was evacuated the project changed shape and my partner groups continued work in the capital with educational seminars. They are in the process of filing paperwork to start a new NGO specifically for positive deviance hearth projects in Mauritania and named it in my honor. I continue to provide support from the US in the form of information and documents I was given access to through the Peace Corps. Supplemental projects included: English conversation class with school staff; computer lessons with school director and teachers on basic computer maintenance, Microsoft Office software, and virus prevention; collaboration with other volunteers on several world map projects, school gardens, food preservation talks, and distribution of seeding Neem and Moringa trees.
