Based in the control room for BHP Billiton's iron ore port, the main responsibility of this role is to be the first point of call to resolve any control system issue in the most efficient and safe manner. When the control system is behaving itself, the focus turns to optimisation & continuous improvement in the following ways:-PLC programming-Citect HMI programming -Root cause analysis investigations-Control room operator coaching-Electrician coaching & technical support

After a back surgery in 2013, the desk-based role I was previously working in wasn't ideal for my recovery, so I took the opportunity to get back "on the tools".As a shift maintenance electrician, I was responsible for preventative and breakdown maintenance on all equipment across the port at Finucane Island such as:-Stackers-Reclaimers-Shiploaders-Conveyors-Car Dumpers-Rescreening-Sumps & Water recovery-Dust collectors My experience working on this equipment as both electrician and technical officer have given me a firm understanding of all electrical systems such as:-High voltage supply and protection-PLC control system and associated hardware-Instrumentation-Network communications-Light & Power-Motor control & protection-Variable speed drives

Primary focus of this position was to be the first point of call for control system faults at BHP's port facility at Finucane Island, Port Hedland.A tech-support style role catering to both electricians and control room operators, day-to-day work involved troubleshooting complex faults with equipment such as:-PLC and associated network infrastructure-Variable speed drives-Vibration, Weight, Level detection instruments-Motor control and protectionFurther to reactive work, there was also a focus on continuous improvement, which included:-Root cause analysis-PLC programming-Citect HMI programming-Training/mentoring electricians-Technical document preparation (such as electrical drawings, work instructions, functional specs)
