I was Associate Dean and Head of the School of Allied Health and Midwifery at the University of Wolverhampton, charged with the overall management of the programmes within the School. I led a team that provided high-quality education for aspiring registrants in the fields of midwifery, occupational therapy, paramedicine, physiotherapy, and podiatry. My role was never on my career agenda but it has been hugely rewarding. It provided me with opportunities to make changes and to support our amazing teaching teams to develop high-quality, caring healthcare professionals.My early career started in West Midlands Ambulance Service, where I qualified as a paramedic in 1992, and later as an ambulance service trainer and educator in 1995. I took my first steps into higher education in 2003 when I was appointed to the role of course leader for the newly approved (but short-lived) combined nurse-paramedic programme. Since then I have worked in various leadership roles in higher education and have led the development of multiple health professional curricula. I have been a consultant editor on the Journal of Paramedic Practice since its inception, and past Co-chair of the College of Paramedics Education Committee.
