Surfsouthoz VIP is a subscription-based web service offering surf reports, forecasts, news and social network features. I built it solo from scratch starting late in 2019, completing the foundation work on the underlying platform ( Triplesss ) during the 2020 lockdown. Version 1.0 was launched on Dec 23, 2020.

Surfsouthoz began in April 2000, when I became the second ever person to post regular online surf reports for the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia ( the pioneer honor belongs to my friend Dan Sheidow who posted infrequent reports for Realsurf.com commencing in late 1998 ). The whole shebang was mothballed in 2001 while I worked full-tilt on southcam.com.au, but re-instated later in 2002 following the winding up of son-of-southcam, wavewatch.com.au. Over more than a decade the name has evolved to become one of the best-known surfing brands in South Australia, monetized through a range of accessories and media products. Surfsouthoz has spent the last few years developing its social media audience, amassing almost 5000 followers on Facebook. The site and brand continue to evolve, with the first mobile website launched in 2010 and a new look, redesigned responsive website live on Jan 1, 2018. In December 2020 SurfSouthoz switched to a 100% subscription model, like OnlyFans except for fewer boobs and more waves. Surfsouthoz VIP continues to provide a small, select group of South Australian surfers with detailed surf forecasts, reports, and news to this very day.

Smartsite is the name of the web consultancy I started after I registered the domain name smartsite.com.au in 1998.It was my trading name through a long period of freelance / contract work through the early to late noughties, but these days it's really just a home for all the ideas I don't get to work on during the daylight hours. I hang onto it because I have a lot of affection and nostalgia for the name, even though these days it sounds a bit cheesey!

Integrating Okta Identity and Access Management into NCVER's data products as part of a beta / proof-of-concept. NCVER's websites are hosted on Squiz, so there are a few tricks to get everything playing nicely. The final beta will hook in Qlick through SAML to grant users registered through the platform access to data products specific to their RTO ( Registered Training Organisation ).

I developed and tested features on Personify Care's Healthcare Saas web application. The work was test driven full-stack development on a cloud deployed platform, with features and bugs tracked and managed by Atlassian and Trello. We took problems faced by clinicians working at the coalface and turned them into solutions, often in a matter of days. The Personify Care app reduces hospital re-admissions by streamlining processes that have long been paper-based. It allows clinicians to spend more time with their patients, and offers a measured improvement in patient outcomes.

Working in the excellent marketing team at AIB, 2017 saw the business migrate a number of web assets off Wordpress and into the CentricMinds CMS, at the same time as a major branding, content and product refresh. I built three interactive tools in the second half of the year, and these have played a significant part in generating leads for AIB's MBA programme.

I was extensively involved with Coastalwatch.com over more than a dozen years. From 2002 I supplied them with daily surf reports for the Mid and South coasts on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, and I oversaw / performed the installation and maintenance of Coastalwatch's three surf webcam sites in SA ( Chiton Rocks, Seaford, and Glenelg SLSC ) . Coastalwatch wound back their national network of surf reporters at the end of September 2017, I and many others around the country were replaced by a single, centralised reporter.

I worked as a front end web developer for Network News on interactive and in-depth features used across all Newscorp's masthead websites ( Advertiser, Herald Sun, The Australian, Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail and Perth Now ) and on News.com.au. Network News / Network Hub is a national / decentralized team with a presence in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide. All the talent was in Adelaide. :D

In November 2005, Online Surf launched the first entirely online surf shop in Australia. Focusing on hardwear and accessories, our philosophy was to supply people that actually surfed with the gear they needed - like removable fins, wetsuits, and deck grip. The online store was a highly customised install of OSCommerce, and I built the front end and numerous content modules to classify and display our products more elegantly. I also built a plug-in to support the EWAY e-commerce payment gateway, as none existed at the time.

Initially I worked on BAU projects for AdelaideNow.com.au, and the Tour Down Under snap-in website. I later picked up the development of the AdelaideNow mobile site ( m-site ), which was launched on Wednesday Jun 27 2012.

I was contracted to build the Principal's Australia network pilot until end of November 2011. I worked in a pair programming team as a back-end developer, extending the Principal's Australia website. The site was based on a vanilla Mahara e-portfolio platform, which we bolted up a custom template to ( designed by Memphis Agency ). I worked on developing four plug-ins using Mahara's plug in and module framework: multi-user media wiki integration, a media file management / upload system, a post rating system based on facebook "like" functionality, and a key competency benchmarking system. We worked in a small team with a part time tester and a project manager in ESA's offices at Dulwich.

Initially hired as PHP / MySQL developer, my main focus later shifted to running & managing 3 MySource Matrix installations.In 2009 I migrated the three biggest websites in PIRSA's portfolio ( pir.sa.gov.au. sardi.sa.gov.au and ruralsolutions.sa.gov.au ) from the legacy Knowledge Network content management system to MySource Matrix. Outside agencies had quoted prices ranging from $14,000 to $70,000, and timeframes ranging from 3 to 9 months to perform this work.I successfully migrated 98% of the content all three sites - about 120,000 web pages and 35,000 documents in PDF, Excel and MS Word format in 4 weeks using custom scripts I wrote from scratch. The remaining content cleaning was performed by a web content editor over the three months that followed.In 2010 I migrated the PIRSA Intranet and Internet search platform from a hosted mnogo solution to two Google Mini search appliances. I then implemented the new search forms in the sites' numerous web templates, set up customised channels, plus reports / monitoring, and indexing / crawlers for html, media and documents hosted on each site.

Wavewatch was the first website to offer surf cams in South Australia. The company initially set out on an advertising revenue model, but later adopted a subscription based approach. As technical lead I developed and implemented all the infrastructure the business was built on, from remote controlled web camera software and hardware, to a Java applet for viewing the cam images.

I developed and maintained precision electronic equipment used in research projects by post grad students and scientists in the School of Chemistry, Physics and Earth Sciences. I developed my first Java applet after teaching myself Java 1.1 in the evenings, in 1998. It was an animation that simulated six types of atomic collisions, that Dr Igor Bray used in lectures and presentations.

Tytronics designs and manufactures electronic controllers used in whitegoods and domestic appliances. I worked in Research and Development, prototyping and testing new controllers for customers like Simpson, Seeley International, Braemar, and HPM. In 1995 I researched production cost savings, sourcing new suppliers, testing materials and implementing them in production. In 1996 I redeveloped the company's change management system from paper based to electronic ( Microsoft FoxPro ), reducing the change co-ordinator workload from 4 days FTE to less than 1 FTE, and dramatically improving efficiency. Let me just say how impressed I am that you read this far. You are either devilishly curious, a stalker, or a psycho!
