I am an archaeologist with over 40 years experience in the public and private sectors and have worked for as a Consultant since 2016 when I took voluntary redundancy from Historic England. Prior to that I had undertaken a variety of roles for Historic England and its predecessor bodies managing archaeological projects through to publication, notably work at Catterick (Cataractonium) Roman town. The Catterick Project incorporated fieldwork on a variety of sites between 1981 and 1997 and took in the 'backlog' publication of excavations undertaken by Prof John Wacher and others (published 2002). I was the English Heritage Head of Research Policy (Roman Archaeology) from 2005-2012.As a consultant I have undertaken desktop assessments, provided advice on fieldwork projects and project designs, acted as Project Manager and lead author for post-excavation and publication projects and undertaken a variety of editing and copy-editing roles, as well acting as a pre-submission reader and formal referee for reports.My primary research interests are the Roman army, the Roman period in the north of England, Roman and native interaction. I have published widely on those topics and others including archaeology and metal-detecting. From 2014 to 2021 I was Honorary Secretary of the Royal Archaeological Institute. After leaving Historic England I became a Trustee of the Vindolanda Charitable Trust and also of the Senhouse Roman Museum in Maryport and have been Chair of Trustees at the latter since 2018.
