I foresee that this will eventually be a bigger market worldwide than mobile radio and hence founded PowerOasis as a provider of specialised distributed power system solutions for a wide range of applications including; hybrid and microgrids, base stations in remote locations, military and government applications, electric vehicles, track side power for rail and latterly power and electric propulsion systems for high altitude UAVs. With my background in analogue and power electronics and through my personal network, I was able to put together an engineering team with a unique combination of expertise in software, power electronics, electrical system design, renewable energy, energy storage and mobile telecommunications so that we can deliver high quality solutions to complex and demanding customer requirements. My vision of smart centralised control of energy systems coupled with the increasing penetration of renewables combined with energy storage has proved accurate. Today PowerOasis systems are deployed all over the world primarily in telecoms systems but we are also moving into other market verticals for distributed energy management and our control platform is finding a niche as a key component in the developing Internet of Things and our software in powertrain and battery management in electric vehicles. With imitators now appearing its only through a deep understanding of customer requirements and continuous product innovation & development that I keep PowerOasis in a technology leadership position. -

Innovation ManagerMotorola May 1989 - 2008Chicago, Illinois, UsI Joined Motorola in Swindon in May 89 as employee number 14 of the newly created European Cellular Infrastructure Division. This was a start up operation tasked with leading Motorola's efforts in the new industry of cellular phone networks in Europe and the development of what was to become the first worldwide mobile standard GSM (Global System for Mobile communications). I had the responsibility to establish an R&D team for radio technology development and then lead it to develop the first radio products for this new market. With great products and marketing the facility grew to in excess of 3000 employees. Throughout this phenomenal growth I played a key role, influencing the strategic direction of product development, in addition to the recruitment of many staff and the development of technical capability as well as operational procedures. I filed the first two GSM patents for the division. As the company grew, so did my responsibilities to include broader engineering management including line management of systems , firmware and software engineering teams, and latterly to include leading internal innovation activities developing new business and technology opportunities and also working with innovative companies externally through Motorola's venture investment group. -

Military Radio Group LeaderMarconi Communications 1980 - 1989I Joined Marconi as a student apprentice and worked for them part time while completing my sandwich degree course at the University of Bath, joining full time as a graduate engineer in 1984. I Worked on two major projects there, the first "Scimitar" a frequency agile HF man pack, the second "SwordFish" a multiband, frequency agile satcom capable radio for naval applications. I was promoted though the design engineering grades, specialising in Radio Frequency (RF) design gaining valuable experience being responsible for a receiver, transmitter and a linear power amplifier design. By the end of the second project, I was group leader responsible for a team of engineers and with the technical responsibility for the complete system design of the SwordFish radio. I Provided sole engineering support to the sales & marketing dept on field trials in Jordan and Bangladesh which enabled me to gain early commercial experience..
