Senior Electrical EngineerEngenious Design Jan 2015 - Nov 2019Prairie Village, Kansas, UsEngenious Design is an R&D company that specializes in rapid and accurate product development. We do that by actually following a requirements-driven design process. We have found that if we spend a little extra time at the beginning of a project getting the architecture and requirements of a product nailed down, we minimize churn. In that way, we are able to produce a quality product in just a few design iterations. We have extensive experience in electrical, mechanical, software and industrial engineering. We have accomplished GUI and graphical designers, and a stellar project management team. Whatever your product development needs are, chances are good that we can help you get it done!So far, I have worked on:● Two Electrosurgical Generator systems● Battery management system to power a heavy-lift launch vehicle● A WiFi video streaming device● A medical screw driver to be used in cranial surgery● A pressure-sensing catheter using in cancer treatment● A bluetooth accessory for a medical heart assist device● A medical massager for use in acne treatment and hair removal● An auto-tracking camera system, as well as the Quad-copter, and Gimbal that go with it● A bluetooth wearable ring● A couple medical robots● Feasibility investigation for a medical audio alarm monitoring system● Accessories for a security alarm system● Several Urine output monitoring and management devices● A solar-powered lighting system for 3rd world countries● A car ignition-locking breathalyzer.● A syringe accessory for an enteral feeding pump -
Senior Electrical Engineer - Electrosurgery R&DConmed Corporation May 2011 - Jan 2015Largo (Tampa Bay), Fl, UsConMed Electrosurgery designs and manufactures a line of Electrosurgical Generators and their accessories. Holding a large part of this market, their products and input define much of the direction of this industry as a whole. As an electrical design engineer, I was the lead for the following projects:● An FPGA control system for a new electrosurgical generator. This generator was the most mode and feature rich generator ever produced by ConMed. ● An update to the FPGA control system of one of the electrosurgical generators that will allow the use of over 200 previously non-conforming control boards. At about $400 per board, this saved the company over $80k, not counting the future savings that will result. Both of these projects used VHDL, Xilinx System Generator and Matlab Simulink to do the design and simulation.I assisted during:● The design, review, and testing of the control board, RF board, and other boards within a new Argon Beam Coagulation electrosurgical generator being developed.● The testing, debug and resolution of a tissue cutting issue in their new thermal fusion device.● The discussion and development of R&D processes that will increase efficiency and effectiveness of the product development system.● The design and testing of a proof of concept thermal fusion device that will lower cost and increase performance.Selected as:● An electrosurgical equipment trainer for Biomedical Technicians● An internal trainer for new visual work management software.● The only non-management member of the Continuous Improvement Team to improve and support efforts to make the company more efficient and effective. -
Electrical Design EngineerRbc Product Development Jun 2005 - Jun 2011RBC provides a comprehensive solution for developing and documenting a concept into a verified and validated product. They specialize in medical devices and providing a proven solution to fit the client’s needs. As an electrical design engineer, I was the hardware lead for the following projects:● The UI portion of a portable Intra-aortic balloon pump system. Interfaces to an SBC, LCD, and the pump unit. Uses the following interfaces: USB, Ethernet, LVDS, SDVO, SD card, and SMBus.● A portable Vascular Compression Device, including an ARM-driven LCD GUI, motor and valve control, Li-Ion battery management and charging.● A seven channel electro-surgical RF generator for a cosmetic surgery application with a Windows CE GUI.● The touchscreen UI portion of two different single-channel electro-surgical RF generators.● Manufacturing issues support and transfer of an OEM Pulse Oximeter product line to Shanghai, China. Included long-distance consulting and on-site test fixture bring-up and validation.● Designed and verified a Coldfire-based Single Board Computer. This product includes the following interfaces: 8 USB host, 2 RS-232, RS-485, USB slave, analog video, LVDS and TFT LCD, 2 CAN, 2 Ethernet, PCI, Flexbus, DDR, NOR and NAND flash, RTC, Audio speaker and line out.● Redesigned an air particulate sampler to include: a particle counter, HF RFID with custom-designed antenna, and additional computational and memory capacity. Passed FCC Class B as an intentional radiator.● OEM Pulse Oximeter integration project: provided power, communication protocol conversion and an electrical safety isolation barrier.● Multiple Pulse Oximeter support and debugging projects.Reviewer and consultant for the following projects:Various EMI / EMC issues; custom 5-port Ethernet Hub; Electrosurgical Unit user interface, power supply and output sensing; Modification of an existing Pulse Oximeter to fit different form factor, isolation and power supplies

Electrical Design Engineer And Engineering InternUncopiers, Inc Jun 2002 - Jun 2005Uncopiers, Inc. conducts cutting edge research and development of the novel platform technology based on acoustic microcavitation. This technology, which was developed completely in-house, is capable of precision cleaning and coating removal. Possible applications range from stealth coating removal on aircraft to semiconductor cleaning. As the only electrical engineer, I was in charge of the design, development and refinement of these one of a kind devices, their firmware (C for PIC16 microcontrollers) and PC-side control software(Java):● A Function Generator capable of outputting bursts of sine, square or triangle waves with adjustable frequency (16MHz-20kHz), amplitude (0-10V), and timing. A PC controlled it over RS-232.● A motion controlled rotary Robot Arm that could change multiple settings and oscillation modes.● An adjustable, gated, RS-232 controlled, Peak Detection module for analog signal analysis of cavitation events. Allowed user adjustable parameters for cavitation event criteria.● An automated two-axis translation stage with adjustable speed and movement area.High Power, High Voltage, Adjustable Signal Attenuator.● A PC program (Java) that controlled an Agilent Function Generator over RS-232● Various other needed interfacing and timing circuits.I also was involved in other interesting, non-Electrical Engineering projects:● Direct manager for several EE and computer science interns.● Ultrasonic cavitation threshold experiments using self designed instruments.● Built one cleanroom (8'x8'), then designed and built another cleanroom (16'x8'). Both achieved better than Class 1 cleanliness.● Installed and managed the computer and phone networks as well as all of the computers in use.● Designed and assembled the first revision of a rotary robot arm that could change multiple settings and oscillation modes.● Designed and built the first revision of a Peak Detection module for signal analysis of cavitation events.
