As the VP of Engineering I am responsible for 114 staff in Auckland, Colorado Springs, and Redmond. I turned the tide of mid-covid culture degradation and engineering attrition to increase headcount by 30% between mid 2021 and 2023 while lowering attrition. I implemented mission-aligned teams and established a Group Enablement function to maximise the effects of Conway’s Law and better align our disparate software products. Working with a 100% new Product function meant collaborating to help establish new practices in discovery and product-led-growth. Meanwhile I refocused the teams on value delivery and efficiency, analyzing and optimising Pull Request lifecycle friction, CI/CD pipelines, breakdown of work, DORA metrics while maintaining a strong engineering culture with advocacy and engagement. I oversaw the establishment of team augmentation relationships with multiple partners in the US and NZ.I participated in the due diligence team during multiple acquisition engagements and ultimately when being acquired in our privatization, owning the messaging and alignment within our engineering teams to maintain culture and focus.Responsibility for the engineering budget rests with me including people, hosting costs, contractors, and licensing. This runs like clockwork now with a “no surprises” approach and aligning spend to appropriate drivers.My proudest achievements are of ​​my role in establishing a blameless, low friction, high velocity engineering culture that has been an incubator for some of the best engineering and engineering leadership talent in Auckland. We have met many challenges in our years, especially during hypergrowth and the operational impact of massive scale during COVID lockdowns in the US. All the while we have maintained a strong reputation especially in NZ for a company that builds software that serves an unfamiliar market

I cut code on the payments platform, implemented CI/CD (multiple times on different stacks and technologies), planned, implemented and managed two data centre migrations, including one to the AWS cloud. Designed, coded, implemented and supported a large multi-region cloud environment using 30 different AWS accounts, hundreds of machines, lambdas, RDS, DynamoDB, Elastic Container Service, lots of other AWS services, and all to the highest level of security, availability and cost management standards achieving AWS Well Architected status, PCI compliance and successfully defending against DDoS and other production related incidents. I helped establish the hiring process and the incident response strategy. Managed platform costs for cloud, observability and other partners. I hired, trained and led the SRE team while also managing Security and Data Science.

Team Lead of the DevTech team charged with laying the foundations for continuous delivery. Introduced git, Slack ChatOps, T4 based code generation and the beginnings of a DevOps culture. Involved in planning APM system deployment, automated cloud based DevTest environments and branching strategy changes. Learned a great deal more about SCRUM, agile at scale, security focused development and leadership skills.

As the Windows apps lead I am responsible for ensuring the team have time to work on non-billable projects (open source, templates, common components and training), arranging and encouraging “show & tells”, cross-project co-ordination and quality, improving the accuracy of estimates and bringing in new tools, systems and processes.Developed the Windows Phone 8 personal banking application for the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. We delivered this project to great reviews and feedback both in the store and technology media.

Marker Metro is the world's first 100% Windows apps agency building apps and games across Windows 8 and Windows Phone.Taking a departure from my previous focus on enterprise development I joined Marker Metro as a Senior Developer building apps for the Windows 8 and Windows Phone platforms using mostly XAML and C#.

Implemented an Enterprise Workflow system using Windows Workflow 4, Windows Communication Foundation. Created a domain driven software factory with visual designers and code generators using DSL Tools for Visual Studio.Worked closely with Microsoft as a TAP partner on Workflow Foundation and Windows Server AppFabric visiting the Redmond campus to work with the product teams on several occasions.Learned a great deal about Domain Driven Design, Domain Specific Languages, software patterns, architecture, SCRUM, agile, technical leadership, intrinsic vs extrinsic motivators and practical, measured approaches to growing large scale enterprise software.
