One of the most important books in my work life is Edgar Schein’s "Humble Inquiry: The Gentle Art of Asking Instead of Telling." It’s a powerful evocation of the principle that to learn we must ask and to grow we must listen. After leading communications operations in higher education and related nonprofits for more than 25 years, I established Mackey Strategies in 2016, and this interest in caring inquiry and reflective interrogation is central to how we operate. Today, our clients include R-1 universities, liberal arts colleges, national foundations, and independent schools. With all our clients, we trust that open-minded and persistent inquiry can lead to clearer understanding and breakthrough ideas (to borrow from another book on the topic, Warren Berger’s "A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas"). We love it when clients observe around this work something like, “In all my years here, we have never before understood or expressed so clearly what we’re about.” It’s always because of inquiry. I earned my Ph.D. in 20th-century British literature and literary theory from USC (and published this book: Chaos Theory and James Joyce’s Everyman. Get yours while supplies last!). I earned both my M.A. and B.A. in four years from Case Western Reserve University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and with long hair then to boot. My latest book is “How to Change the Future: Lessons from Ireland on Revolutionizing Scientific Innovation and Economic Prosperity,” available via Amazon, including in Kindle format. In this book, my co-author—William C. Harris, who was the founding Director General of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI)—and I offer 20 specific lessons for educational, research, and business collaborations to produce significant economic results. It is based on the success Ireland has had with SFI doing just that over the last 20 years.I frequently contribute to professional conferences and journals. I more frequently spend time outdoors.
