I've been fortunate to have had several stimulating careers. I have worked as an electrical engineer, a systems analyst, an economic development executive, and an independent international trade and investment consultant before becoming co-founder of Axios International Ltd, an Ireland-based global health consulting firm, in 1997.In 2000, I became co-founder and CEO of Akesis Health Inc (formerly Axios Foundation), a nonprofit global public health company. Everything that Akesis does is related to improving access to medicines and health care, mainly by strengthening aspects of the health system in target countries. We share a long history with Axios International Ltd, which is a pioneer and worldwide leader in creative access programs for a wide spectrum of major pharmaceutical companies that improve affordability and availability of medicines in over 25 countries, mainly in the Middle East, Asia and South America. During the late 1990s, we negotiated the first reductions in ARV pricing with leading pharmaceutical companies, a critical breakthrough that was the precursor of the major ARV price reductions in 2001-2. In the early 2000s, we pioneered new and effective mechanisms to improve and expand pharmaceutical donation and access programs, through which we have provided HIV/AIDS commodities and services to over 8 million patients through 400 institutions in 70 countries worldwide– including 40 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This early work led Akesis to develop the expertise in strengthening of health systems, particularly supply chain and laboratory systems, that underpins much of the work of the Akesis companies today. Our work in supply chain strengthening has been mainly in Africa, and related to reproductive, maternal, newborn & child health, HIV, TB, malaria, and primary healthcare. Akesis is also a partner in PICMA Africa Ltd, a Zambian company that envisions strong, sustainable and locally led health supply chains throughout Africa. The partnership brings together four organizations rooted in Africa: PharmaSystAfrica, Celsian Consulting, Medical Access and Akesis. www.picma-scm.com
