“At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.” As a safety officer for 30+ years serving in law enforcement and workplace safety, my days have been filled with ensuring the safety and security of my communities and my places of employment. In several capacities, I’ve served as occupational safety officer for the Queensland Police Service. Here are just a few of the ways I’ve used my enthusiasm for workplace safety to better the environments in which I’ve worked: ♦ PEER-NOMINATED DISTRICT WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE: Reported directly to senior management regarding workplace issues, including injuries and illnesses occurring at or due to workplace incidences.♦ CHANGED SAFETY PROTOCOLS: Altered firearms’ storage safety procedure resulting in new clearance criteria to minimise risk of accidental discharge.♦ INVESTIGATED WORKPLACE OCCURRENCES: Provided solutions to eliminate or reduce any risks through employee retraining, altering environmental design, and modifying personal protective equipment.♦ LIAISED WITH INTERDEPARTMENTAL TEAMS TO ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY: Worked with senior management, city council, and international race car event organisers to report concerns and real time risks of serious injury or death via falling or crushing.
