In conjunction with Race Control and First Intervention Responders the role also provided assistance with intervention to major incidents. ChemWaste Industries Limited was the only national liquid and hazardous waste collection and treatment company in New Zealand. The position reported to the General Manager and was responsible for all management functions including administration, sales and marketing, operations and personnel. A Plant Manager (chemist) and Transport Manager reported to the position.The branch operated a treatment plant treating up to 2 million litres of waste per month and 11 collection vehicles. During my period as Branch Manager the branch was compliant with all regional council consents (approvals) as well as its trade waste consent and maintained good relations with all regulatory authorities as well as meeting or exceeding commercial targets.

United Environmental was one of two major liquid waste treatment companies operating in Auckland. The Plant Manager was responsible for the operational management of the treatment plant and supervised 2 chemists, a foreman and several plant operators. The Plant Manager was responsible for compliance with all environmental legislation as well as other management functions such as budgeting, staff management etc. During my time with the company, waste volumes and revenues were increased by approximately 50% without the employment of additional staff.

Cleanaway was the largest single operator in the waste management industry in both Australia and the UK. The Technical Services Branch provided expertise in hazardous waste analysis, treatment and disposal. The Technical Manager reported to the Queensland Manager and was responsible for the management, marketing, development and project management of all services. This included waste fixation, bioremediation, contaminated site remediation, emergency response and laboratory services. The Technical Manager also assisted the Queensland Manager with liaison with government and statutory bodies and required an extensive knowledge of all relevant legislation.

This role involved undertaking chemical analysis, performing research and managing treatment plants for the Water Supply and Sewerage Department. This included water treatment plants, sewage treatment plants and an industrial waste treatment plant.During this time other chemists, technicians, technical assistants and clerks were supervised. I was also a member of the emergency response team providing advice to the Queensland Fire Service at the scene of chemical spills, fires etc.

This role involved chemical and microbiological quality control and analysis of raw materials and beer at all stages of its production. On afternoon and night shifts this involved sole responsibility for all laboratory functions. The role also involved liaison with production staff, maintenance staff, IT staff and management.
