I manage two interrelated core facilities within the Department of Biology's Bioscience Technology Facility. I have run the Bioinformatics service since 2005 providing support to a wide range of research groups in the Department. I now also run the Genomics lab, providing access to the technologies that are used to generate the data that the Bioinformatics group analyse.

I ran the Bioinformatics Lab within the Biology Department's Technology facility. The aim was to provide bioinformatics support to those research groups in the department which do not need a full time bioinformatician. It also involves teaching courses for undergraduate, masters and PhD students, and consultancy on bioinformatics, but also on wider data analysis issues.

Continuing work on the annotation of the Schistosoma genome and integrating the data into the group's proteomics work.

I spent eight months working in the Pathogen Sequencing Unit at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, performing preliminary annotation of the Schistosoma mansoni genome. From the initial assemblies, this involved mapping ESTs to the genome sequence and hand editing gene models which were then used to train a range of gene finders. I also annotated the resulting gene predictions and implemented a genome browser to visualise the assemblies, gene predictions and annotations. This data and genome browser were subsequently implemented in GeneDB.

Research into the basic biology of Schistosoma mansoni, including the proteomics of the egg secretions which promote pathogenesis during infection, and participating in the annotation of the first draft of the genome sequence.

Various posts in the computer industry, starting as a programmer at SLS (Informations Systems) in Bristol, working on library automation systems where I eventually ended up as a project manager. On leaving SLS, became self-employed as a consultant programmer and worked for a range of clients including TSB and Lloyds Bank.
