I have been fortunate to journey through a career including Software Development (~10 years), Corporate Consulting (~12 years) and growing a startup from nothing through two rounds of Private Equity to a successful exit (~20 years).The enduring lesson is that size matters - smaller businesses require significantly different approaches. Primarily governance, technology, capabilities and behaviours.For privately owned businesses, simplifying the company roadmap, aligning capabilities with vision and being clear about what can be controlled always delivers the healthiest environment to navigate growth. In other words, "How to harmonise Vision with capability AND performance?"My work typically helps Founders, Owners and Boards in privately owned companies quickly establish a roadmap suited entirely to their business situation and vision. My advice relies on more classic strategy frameworks (without the jargon). The collective challenge is always to simplify, clarifying purpose and pathway to sustainable growth (not always the fastest growth).My approach sometimes involves trusted, high quality colleagues and friends when required by the Client with examples including - Investment, Technology, Marketing, Finance and Analytics.In some cases, where the chemistry is right, I will invest, providing the owners and founders ongoing support.
