About Peter Bacas

It is not possible to mitigate emissions associated with any specific field of sustainability without first measuring the impacts. This is especially key to the construction sector which is rapidly expanding the use of EPDs and LCA to report on environmental impacts. Now at the US EPA, I am a passionate young sustainability professional who is focused on estimating, quantifying, and improving the environmental impacts from construction activities in order to enable a more accurate reporting of impacts.Previously, I worked for the Port Authority of NY & NJ on Clean Construction Initiatives from 2019-2023. These components combined to create an industry-leading clean construction program at the Port Authority of NY & NJ by leveraging existing data from the agency and combining it with new clean construction metrics from academia and industry experts to determine the division's embodied carbon impacts in a given year. These initiatives included:1. Established new clean construction contract specifications (including A1 GWP limits for Concrete).2. Quantifying the CO2e of our key construction materials (Asphalt, Concrete, & Steel).3. Determining baseline CO2e metrics to quantify carbon emission reductions from the agency's baseline year.4. Implemented a carbon tracking platform to calculate and store material quantities and their related carbon emissions to deliver KPIs to A1-A3 senior leadership.

In order to drive the adoption of substantially lower embodied carbon construction materials, the US EPA has been tasked with improving and standardizing embodied carbon reporting through EPDs. Here, I am focusing on several key construction materials (Asphalt, Concrete, Steel, and their related products) to further the adoption of EPDs while also working to standardize Product Category Rules. This will be aided by $250 Million that was allocated to the US EPA from the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 to help fund various potential strategies by the use grants.
