After working in various engineering disciplines (project engineer, equipment engineer, process design engineer), I succumbed, in 1989, to the siren call of CADDS. In this arena, following a support role with VAX based PDS, I led a scanning project that converted all nuclear steam plant drawings from mylar to scanned files. The first phase of this project beat project estimates by about 30% and resulted in a six month cost recovery for the CAD system. Building on this success of this, I next led a service project that modelled the CANDU6 reactor building using Intergraph PDS. Execution of this service contract beat the estimated costs by about 20%. The next challenge was to produce nuclear steam plant process deliverables (flow sheets, General arrangement drawings and isometrics) from PDS for a two-unit nuclear plant. I was honoured with a Distinguished Merit Award from AECL. Next up was a conversion of our PDS installation from PDS to SmartPlant. This took place in two phases: SmartPlant P&ID (in 2005) and then 3D/SP Foundation (in 2007). A highlight of this conversion was our first publish/retrieve between P&ID and 3D in December 2007. Following 2007, I was the team leader for SmartPlant support at AECL and later at Candu Energy, Inc. Other software that I introduced to AECL/Candu were CAXperts' Plant Remodeler and SmartPlant Reference Data.
