I had the amazing opportunity to work with a great team of people at the Mission Township Fire Department. This role focused heavily on training and education, responding directly to emergency fire and medical calls, and providing station coverage on a volunteer basis.

Working at the Kansas Health Institute both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic gave me an invaluable insight into the systems, policies, and environmental factors that shape our health each day. I worked on a broad range of projects involving research, facilitation, legislative monitoring, and policy analysis. In this role I gained an even greater appreciation for the benefits of working as part of a highly skilled and dedicated team of individuals who constantly strive to support each other while growing personally and professionally.

As is the case with so many experiences, I have learned almost as much from reflection as I did in the fast paced role of Policy Analyst for Governor Jeff Colyer. I developed the ability to quickly learn about issues, build relationships, and leverage the skills and experience of others through coordination and facilitation. I also grew my analytical skills and the ability to manage many competing priorities.

Working on this statewide campaign went well beyond politics. It allowed me to meet people from all across Kansas and hear about their goals, challenges, local histories, and success stories. I learned so much about what people expect from their leaders, how community members support each other, and how to work as a member of team.
