Developed, implemented, and taught Marine/Env Science, and Maritime History program; built a dedicated classroom and fish hatchery lab. Program featured hands on, real life, current exploration, research and historical information based curriculum - covering foundation of earth, atmospheric and oceanic structure and processes; maritime history, history of navigation, maps, and their evolution. Surveyed of coastal and oceanic ecosystems from ocean to shore/breadth of water column; unique anatomical features, specialization and behaviors of significant genera and species such as cephalopods, and ocean mammal evolution. Examined environmental impacts, historic and current fisheries and aquaculture practices around the world; issues such as counterfeit seafood marketing in food stores and restaurants, and mercury levels and seafood choices. Students maintained and operated four 40 - 60 gallon fresh and salt water thematic habitats and a 200 gallon trout hatchery, conducted weekly water testing; creating semi annual water quality reports for each system. Cap field project - day long marine science sailing/sampling voyage onboard restored 1887 sailing oyster boat SSV Christine, field trip to Frank Flowers Oyster aquaculture farm, and surveying and collecting organisms on the beach; all in West Harbor - Oyster Bay, Long Island. Cap final activity - from acquired year long knowledge, packets of 17th and 18th century historic documents, maps, and selections from the book "Mannahatta" by Sanderson et al, students simulate a world wide ship voyage in the year 1600, making landfall on Manhattan Island. Students identify wind systems, currents, names of land forms; then make informed decisions of where to land, what to salvage, identify specific local natural resources, how to survive, and interact with native peoples - defending their choices with information and reasoning.
