I am an undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield, studying Politics and International Relations. My natural affection for politics means I have mostly entertained the idea of being employed in the public sector, though since developing a decent enough skill set in research and written communication, roles in finance, marketing, consultation and administration have fallen well within my compass of interest. Whilst this range may seem broad, I consider ecumenical tastes to be more healthy than otherwise; this belief led both to my doing the Engineering Education Scheme (in collaboration with JCB) and an Extended Project on the foreign policy differences between the Obama and Bush White Houses. My degree title is evidence of which I found most interesting, but this does not exclude the fact that the former deepened my understanding and certainly developed my skill set beyond what it was. I have a policy of being open to opportunity regardless of its seeming relevance at the time, because it almost inevitably proves worth the effort in the end. Outside of education, I have indulged myself in learning both an instrument and a second language. I am currently working towards a Grade 6 in acoustic guitar, after earning my Grade 4 with distinction, and am progressing through intermediate Spanish. Having recently read my first book in the language, and having earned first-classes in modules taken with the university, I consider myself fluent enough to translate most written Spanish with the aid of a dictionary. Spoken Spanish, however, is a fiercer animal, though not one I consider untameable. I hope to be conversational within the next year, a goal that will be supported by my placement at the University of Texas on the study abroad scheme, where my proximity to native speakers will surely accelerate my learning. Afterward, though, the question still remains as to which language to learn next.
