Freelance Print And Digital Production

Sydney, Australia

Working to produce high-quality editorial copy for the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Australian Financial Review and the Canberra Times print products plus these brands' online offering.

Mar 2018 - Sep 2019

Deputy Chief Producer And Deputy Chief Sub-Editor, The Sydney Morning Herald

Sydney, Australia

Like many leading newspaper publishers around the world, The Sydney Morning Herald has had to adapt to today's multi-platform delivery of it's journalism in addition to maintaining traditional print products. However, at the core of what it produces is still quality, independent journalism that its readers can trust as being accurate, truthful, insightful, entertaining and thought-provoking. Instead of delivering its journalism in print only form, it can now be accessed 24-hours a day online and via mobile and tablet. My wide-ranging role as the Deputy Chief Producer, and prior to that Deputy Chief Sub-Editor, was to help deliver that journalism in print and online. I was responsible for the design and production of daily news pages under extremely tight deadlines for the Monday to Saturday and Sunday editions. This involved working closely with the Editor-in-Chief and print editors on the treatment of stories while at the same time leading each edition’s production and co-ordinating this with senior editors, reporters, picture editors, graphic designers, desk editors and where appropriate, lawyers. This also included selecting photographs and laying out news pages to strict design criteria while being fully aware of the content and design of each day’s paper to maintain the consistency of the overall product. I also worked on the production of copy, SEO headlines and picture research for the Herald’s website, plus I also helped prepare EDM newsletters for Herald subscribers and the Herald's iPad edition. I was also the point of contact for all editorial departments who needed help and advice on any production challenges they faced. My role also involved the ad hoc in-house training of new staff and I was also called on to travel to New Zealand, Melbourne and Canberra to carry out training for in-house and outsourced production staff. The Herald won the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers’ Association Newspaper of the Year award in 2009 and again in 2010.

Nov 2008 - Jun 2017

Features Sections Production Editor, The Sydney Morning Herald

Sydney, Australia

I was responsible for the Friday and Saturday Drive sections and previously Good Living (now Good Food). This involved chief-subbing, designing layouts, liaising with editors, the picture desk and sub-editors, selecting photographs, overseeing corrections and copy flow. This also included troubleshooting, making sure deadlines were met and releasing pages to the printers. While I was Production Editor, Good Living twice won the prestigious World Food Media Awards Best Newspaper Food and Wine Section award and the Australian Food and Wine Writers’ Association Best Food and Wine Section award twice. In addition to my production editor duties I also worked as a check-sub and designed layouts for other sections as required.

A start-up publishing business and associated website. We set out to produce a magazine linked with an online product aimed at high-end rural real estate. I ran the day-to-day magazine and website business as well as setting up and managing the office. We identified that this product and business model was being overtaken by rapid and better-funded developments in IT. Therefore, we made a considered business decision to not continue.
