In amongst the usual daily grind for Managers of budgets, forecasts, labour market analysis, and developing strategies that forge and foster partnerships ultimately it comes to the fact that everyone has the right to employment and that anyone can achieve this.

Minniecon and Burke was a Job Network. It operated under a contract with the Department of Education and Workplace Relations with 10 offices throughout Queensland and we worked collectively with industry with those employers that were looking to develop or implement agency specific initiatives around the recruitment of staff and in particular the retention of Indigenous employees. These strategies draw upon proven methods, as constructed through exhaustive consultation with ‘key’ stakeholders in the Townsville community, of achieving these outcomes and it was our aim to ultimately:1. Deliver a better quality of assistance to unemployed people. Leading to better and more sustainable employment outcomes;2. Targeted assistance to/for job seekers who need it and who can best benefit from it; and 3. Achieve benchmark status for best practice.As site manager I was responsible for the day to day running of the office. This encompassed the need to remain competitive with our fellow Networks, maintaining our contractual compliance under the scope of our government contract, and ensuring that our office was financially viable and profitable.Ultimately, however, the recruitment and retention of our clients, especially indigenous clients, into long term employment outcomes was dependent on our ability with: identifying the skills they require; providing appropriate pathways to employment that allow Indigenous employees to develop these skills; and providing culturally inclusive workplace opportunities/employers that recognises and supports indigenous employee’s.In comparison to other Job Networks Minniecon and Burke was a small player but was held in very high regard in government circles and for number years was the benchmark for other Job networks. I will always be thankful and grateful for the skills, knowledge and professionalism I was exposed to whilst working with Mitch Burke and Nat Minniecon.
