Today, we offer a mix of teaching, research excellence and industry partnerships.My role is designed to provide high level strategic leadership for the provision of technical and safety services across the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE) at Newcastle University to ensure a comprehensive, robust and sustainable model to underpin the Faculty’s business, encompassing both facilities and a team of around 160 technicians in a highly diverse set of disciplines. We have an ambitious vision to be in the top10 science and engineering faculties in the UK by 2025, with at least one discipline in the first position. Our presence extends beyond the city centre campus to a variety of outstations such as farms and coastal laboratories, as well as a major presence in Singapore.My role is designed to lead a comprehensive, robust and sustainable technical support model, encompassing both facilities and a team of around 160 technicians in a highly diverse set of disciplines. The largest and broadest-based marine school of its kind in Europe, covering the fields of marine engineering, marine biology, naval architecture, offshore engineering, coastal management and small craft technology, and enjoys a substantial international reputation. The School has at its disposal extensive specialist facilities on the main campus, including the UK's only Cavitation Tunnel, a Towing Tank, and a unique Wind Wave Current Tank. The campus based facilities are complemented by the Dove Marine Laboratory located nearby on the coast, and supported by the School's own Research Vessel. This senior role encompasses the management, development and marketing of the School's laboratory and research facilities, including the line management of 13 highly skilled technicians. It involves the development and implementations of strategies and procedures for the operation and development of facilities, the development of marketing materials and initiatives to promote consultancy activities, as well as supporting world class academic staff in the production of research and consultancy proposals.

This position links with UK Trade and Investment and ONE North East (the Regional Development Agency) to maximise on opportunities for both the Universities and the North East Region with regard to both inward investment and export competitiveness of UK based companies.

North Devon

A founder member and committee member of the original Association in 1979, I was appointed Company Secretary of the operating company in April 2004 and became a Director of the Company shortly thereafter. I was also Chairman of the Charitable Trust in 2005/6 during the critical period when the line was extended to Killington Lane and instigated the reorganisation of the Trust and associated companies into the current format which includes a community interest company (CIC).

This position involved the project management of a cross partnership regeneration initiative leading to the formulation of a spatial masterplan for the economic regeneration of Bideford, linked to planning policy, and funded; funded by the SW Regional Development Agency), and which, crucially, operates across sectors by involving key community stakeholders who are also represented on the steering group.

The University of Sunderland has long been recognised for its "reach-out" activities, which primarily relate to the interaction of the University with the business community.With responsibility to the Assistant Director of Business Development, I was responsible for business development in a number of key areas rarely tackled in this field, and also extensively supported the engineering sections of the University to bring a fresh approach to the University's more traditional technology transfer activities.

My responsibilities concentrated on the division associated with the manufacture of non oxide ceramic raw materials through to fully sintered ceramic engineering components for application in the chemical (pumps, valves, bearings and seals), automotive, refractory, surface treatment and casting industries.Achievements:-Turnaround of the business from a stagnating and partially falling turnover to a average annual growth rate of 23%Improvement of profitability by up to 20%Improvement of market share by 22%Successful introduction of the most appropriate new products into the UK following assessment of market needs to ensure best fit

Alpha Process Controls, part of the broad based GT Group of Engineering Companies, specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of fabricated loading gantries for the transfer of LPG, chemicals and petrochemicals, complete with appropriate safety breakaway and drybreak quick connect coupling systems, as well as valve and other safety equipment for the bottom loading/offloading of rail/ road vehicles. Customers include BP, Shell, Esso plus most of the other multinationals.

Manufacture high performance doorsets such as fire doors and sound absorbing doors for prestigious applications. My position was in the plant and maintenance engineering department as part of a multidisciplinary team.
